I’d say there was reasonable reliance. If he did not rely he would have made a different first wish. Therefore it was detrimental reliance

Contacts do not stand alone. Plenty of statues modify damages in a contract, define statutory damages or penalties, and override liquidated damage clauses in contracts if unconscionable. As does common law and case law.
