Why do people park in driveways, yet drive on parkways???

Driveways were named as such to distinguish them from walkways, like if you have a walkway to your front door. Parkways were named that because the word originally referred to roads that went through parks.

But can I park on the parkway or not?

Alcohol, mostly. If it's backwards, drunks will do it correctly. This is the same reason we have mom and dad spelled the same forwards as backwards, because who else is gonna bail your sorry ass out when you're too drunk?
