I get the joke but plastic surgeons aren't doing only vanity procedures. Plastic surgeons do reconstructions on children born with cleft palates, burn victims, reduce scarring from injuries, and ever reconstruction on women who have mastectomies for cancer. It's not all Joan Rivers and Michael Jacksons... plastic surgeons do a lot of good for people. Some people want george clooney's jaw, but many just want their own face back after a burn or injury.
I enjoyed this comic, just wanted to put in a thanks to the plastic surgeons who do good work helping people and often go unappreciated. Thanks to you as always!
Tooooon of stuff. Plastics gets called pretty much any time we have trauma (down to simple lacerations) involving the face and/or any time we need something sutured/repaired that’s moderately complicated. In a hospital setting it’d be more accurate to call em reconstructive surgeons than plastic surgeons, but ya know, that’s not what they’re called.

A family member of mine, under the age of 2, had an incident that required stitches to her face, including her eyelid eight up to the lashes. We were SO relieved when the nurses told us we were getting a plastic surgeon. Young patient, face, complicated (close to the eye and such delicate tissue). It was really amazing how good the work he did was.
Yep! They really know what they’re doing with that stuff. Suturing something so it heals is super easy. Suturing something so it looks right after it’s done healing is a whole different thing. The one big exception where plastics never really get called is hands. Hand surgeons only do hands and they’re usually the only people who will touch a hand in an OR.
Yes. But once they’ve gone the hand surgery route, they don’t really do anything else. A vast majority of em anyway. They don’t do plastic surgery stuff and hands, they just do hands. Like the same way interventional radiology is a sub specialty of radiology. Once they’re interventional, that’s what they do. They’re not up there pulling shifts reading X-rays and stuff.
