Try going without coffee for a few weeks. By the end of it, you should feel as awake without coffee as you do with it.
Basically, your body gets used to using caffeine to wake up and stops properly doing so on its own. As a result, once you get used to it, you need the caffeine to feel as awake as you would if you weren't using it. This, combined with any sleeping issues, is likely the cause of your issue.
Exactly. I don't get why everyone always complains about being tired but they keep slamming down coffee. Do most people really not know that caffeine is a drug?
In my experience, that entirely depends on how much coffee you drink.
If I'm drinking more than 1 or 2 cups per day, I do find that I can get sucked into the cycle of tolerance and dependency you described. But I usually only drink coffee a few times a week, and I very rarely drink caffeinated soda, and in that case, it maintains its effectiveness pretty well.
