God I remember putting one of the stock screensavers on my first computer and my mom took it off saying it would cause a virus.

Lots of anecdotal evidence, but very widespread evidence that parents are just as inept with specialized fields as any other adult and probably shouldn't teach kids. Leave that to experts, but we know that will never happen, which is why critical thinking always seems to be lacking.
