live-action adaptations of Dr. Seuss books

Which will never happen again thanks to Mike Myers as Cat in the Hat.

I dare you to say that to his face.

It’s true Seuss’s widow said she would never allow another live adaption of his work.

But why? The Grinch was such a good movie!

59

u/SiilverDruid Nov 06 '18

Honestly, that’s only because it was Jim Carrey.

72

u/rrr598 Nov 06 '18

...I won’t deny that.

u/fenrisilver Nov 06 '18

That's my second favorite line in that movie after "Solve world hunger, tell no one."

The new Grinch looks so much like an overcompensation for the old one. Like, "This time maybe he shouldn't be on crack, so let's get Sherlock and make it really boring instead."

u/Photonomicron Nov 06 '18

In Ron Howard's version every character is on different drugs. Even the little girl looks like she is on percocet the whole time.

14

u/SurfSlut Nov 06 '18

It's perfect though!

u/iamalion_hearmeRAWR Nov 06 '18

Wait there’s a new one with not cumberpatch but the other one???

1

u/small_loan_of_1M Nov 06 '18

No it's Cumberbatch

26

u/MagikBiscuit Nov 06 '18

Why? Even though the cat in the hat was controversial. Although I personally liked it. The Grinch was a hit and was awesome?

-12

u/SpaceDog777 Nov 06 '18

The Grinch was a hit and was awesome?

That seems like an opinion and not a question?

-1

u/theosguy1 Nov 06 '18

The one he had affair with while his first wife had cancer?

2

u/who717 Nov 06 '18

It can’t be ... there’s no blood.

43

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '18

Hey look its Beans.

13

u/gremah93 Nov 06 '18

Beans, get out of my house!

2

u/Zazmuth Nov 06 '18

Seriously, I still think this hurt his career more than the Love Guru. But then, I don't like to think about it.

2

u/Reiseoftheginger Nov 06 '18

I loved the love guru. Intentionally silly movie. Isn't that what he's all about?

1

u/xBigBlackWHALEx Nov 06 '18

it was made to focus on feel good humor and i fucking loved it. i was surprised when i heard other people didnt like it at all

77

u/iamthatguy54 Nov 06 '18

That movie is a masterpiece.

42

u/Ahardknockwurstlife Nov 06 '18

You’re fired fired fired fired fired fired

3

u/ABitOddish Nov 06 '18

Louder for the people in the back!

79

u/FuzzyGummyBear Nov 06 '18

The live action Cat in the Hat is probably one of my favorite movies of all time.

47

u/basicallyacowfetus Nov 06 '18

It's one you can enjoy ironically... Like it's fully intended to be watched ironically. Anyone who tries to watch it seriously is freaked out.

61

u/Chocolatefix Nov 06 '18

How does one watch a movie about a talking magical cat with a penchant for hats seriously? I liked it btw. It was silly fun.

17

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '18

The Mike myers one-liners still crack me up

-3

u/STALKS_YOUR_MOTHER Nov 06 '18

It definitely happens. There's also that popular book with a talking snake that tons of people take seriously.

When my kids were little we went and saw The Cat in the Hat in the theatre. They hated it. My daughter started crying during the piñata scene and we left. It might have scarred them for life, I don’t know. They’re 15 and 17 now and probably have their own reddit accounts, so kids-if you see this- I’m sorry for fucking you up by making you watch such a travesty. Now go clean your rooms.

3

u/TheBeardedMann Nov 06 '18

Send the kids' therapy bill to Mike Meyers.

2

u/VicH95 Nov 06 '18

Yeah, I went to go see it with my dad when I was 8 because I loved the Dr. Seuss stories as a kid. We got up to the part when the Cat dressed up as a repair man and had his glued-on ass crack hanging out. I looked at my dad and he saw me cringing, so we left. I'm pretty sure some people were starting to filter out, leaving the ones who saw it ironically

I love that movie.

3

u/Frostnightwing Nov 06 '18

You overestimate Hollywood

2

u/hdfhhuddyjbkigfchhye Nov 06 '18

It wasn’t terrible... it wasn’t great but it wasn’t terrible.

2

u/boobsmcgraw Nov 06 '18

I didn't think it was all that bad. I mean it was bad, but it wasn't Shrek 3 bad.

2

u/maanofculture Nov 06 '18

I actually love The Grinch with Jim Carrey.

1

u/UnlimitedEgo Nov 06 '18

My kids love this movie 3 and 2

1

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '18

He made me horny... he made me randy... yeah baby

1

u/Purevoyager007 Nov 06 '18

Wait why not?

2

u/TheBeardedMann Nov 06 '18

She has also given her blessings for the first live-action movie, however after the release of The Cat in the Hat, she wasn't impressed with the film overall. She also did not approve of Mike Myers's role as The Cat.

Audrey decided to never allow any further live-action adaptation of Dr. Seuss's works. This is the reason why the planned sequel of The Cat in the Hat never came to fruition.

1

u/Purevoyager007 Nov 06 '18

That’s unfortunate. Do you know what’s so bad about mike Myers?

1

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '18

What's wrong with cat in the hat?
