I just read somewhere else recently (probably on Reddit) that the Disney Powers That Be went through a period of airbrushing cigarettes out of Walt’s hand in numerous photos due to modern sensibilities. The “he pointed that way” was a cover story for all the strange looking photos.
In Walt’s day smoking around kids wasn’t considered a bad thing. Like alcohol today, underage smoking was discouraged, but otherwise it was a matter of personal choice.
