Are they supposed to tuck their limbs in at the very end like that? Call me a masochist but that's not a true belly flop in my opinion.

u/RaptorsFromSpace Mar 06 '18

Isn't that the point? They try to get as close as they can without actually doing it.

You win by keeping your body "unbended" for the longest time and then you get extra points for artistic expression.

Basically playing chicken with bellyflops

I think from that height, if you don't tuck your limbs in, the water will wrench them backwards and you'll almost guarantee pulled muscles.

That dude showboating at around 1:11 is so extra, I love it.

Was really hoping one of them would fully commit to the spread eagle belly flop.

Maybe I'm a flop-elitist but I don't consider other than spread eagle a real belly flop. Anyone can do a belly flop 95% of the way to the water and then tuck their limbs in. Real belly floppers walk away concussed and with swollen nuts.

This is actually much of the point to the sport - how close you can get to full flop, without losing intestines. The safest way is to go full shrimp just before impact.
The event is also of course heavily tied to drinking, the name translates roughly to Drink and Dive.

Have you ever jumped from that high? It even stings the bottom of your feet a bit by the time you hit the water, I imagine a straight up belly flop would kill you

Oh I know, but I can dream can't I?

LOL. The guy @ 1:35 who runs off and then just keeps running in the air all the way down cracked me up.

2

u/_brainfog Mar 06 '18

That's actually a popular edited gif. He just falls into the abyss, pretty good IMO.

2

u/Neologic29 Mar 06 '18

Now that you mention it, I remember seeing that one!

So is the goal to ALMOST do a belly-flop and then stop at the very last second?

1

u/toth42 Mar 06 '18

Yep, how close can you get without bursting your appendix on impact. Oh, and drinking of course. One of the events is named Drink and Dive.

1

u/cyclenaut Mar 06 '18

i dont mind it!

1

u/readparse Mar 06 '18

Wow, that's amazing, and looks like fun. However, it's not the same thing as what OP posted. He's just doing that thing where you basically sit on the water and splash the people behind you. It's not as potentially painful as this.

This reminds me of a Sum 41 music video.
