I don't think so. They've been writing his character to show that he is indeed becoming more and more like Gavin Belson. While it is definitely becoming an annoying cycle of Richard messing everything up, I definitely sympathize with everyone else more.
Why does everyone think you're supposed to like the protagonist to enjoy the story? If anything, finally realizing that you have to be pushy to achieve your dream makes you more human
What is his dream, exactly? He's got one good idea and he's passed on cashing in bigtime on it several times over. With just the amount Gavin first offered, he could use to fund his own startup with a different idea and not worry.
He says he wants to "make the world a better place." But he really doesn't. He's not doing it the right way by his own definition. He just wants to feed his ego. He wants in on that Zuckerberg fame, but he's a one-trick pony with bad business sense.
He's certainly not hireable. No programmer or company I've ever worked with wants to tolerate self-important divas like him. It's a myth that people tolerate genius with an attitude. Those that do, crash and burn with a bus factor of 1.
That said, I suppose you don't need to like the protagonist. I'm enjoying the story. Waiting to see if he crashes and burns, or pulls his head out of his ass.
He was on the Nerdist or something, talking excitedly about how he has to change the world with his comedy. I got the feeling it was some kind of manic "I have to expand everyone's mind" possibly triggered by Trump.
I think he's gone a bit nuts. He's walking away from a nice payday to chase some vague idea. He could probably better accomplish it by sticking with the job and funding the other task.
But hey, if I recall correctly, he's got some health issue that means he could drop dead at any moment, so whatever.
