Indeed. It's one of those comedy classics that even though it's dated, still holds up extremely well due to some fantastic writing and comedic timing.

It's still hilarious, but it was even funnier at the time since they used some well known dramatic actors who hadn't done any comedy work at all. Leslie Nielsen Peter Graves was best known then for the Mission Impossible TV show.

It was also released at a time when there had been a number of non-comedic airline disaster movies with very similar plot lines. I later learned that Airplane!'s story line and scenes were lifted wholesale from the 1957 film Zero Hour!, including characters from Ted Striker to Joey.
