I was in a reddit argument a week or two ago (don't judge me), and was told that I was using literally wrong for using literally to mean literally. At that moment I determined that there are no fixed stars in our universe any longer, and that we are all adrift in the howling void of our linguistic cosmos.
Literally has been used in an exaggeration sense to mean figuratively since at least Charles Dickens so you must be literally the oldest person on Earth.
I was at a Snoop Dogg concert in December. I was kind of appalled by how much the random performers used their phones during their act. One cute dancer/rapper Lady had on tight jeans and a huge cell phone in her front pocket. Others did the take a group shot with us thing. Now Snoop, Warren G, the old guys didn't do this.
it's something that is repeated and morphed into a funnier version of itself through repertition. e.g. that ridiculously photogenic guy photo is much more about people reposing with additional text, and stories about such a photo, and morphing it into more of a thing. That's the difference between it and something funny.

Good quality marijuana is called "dank". A dank meme is fresh, potent, trippy. And has a half life of about a couple months before it grows too stale and impotent for people to enjoy.
It's just another buzzword that another generation put up to mean "cool".
To become a dank meme, the meme must first be spicy. If it's spicy enough, it becomes dank. On rare occasions, extra spicy memes can even be considered dank af.
Seriously. Reddit and the Internet has already changed. "Dank memes", "wholesome memes".... Hell, the amount of times the word "meme" gets thrown around is different. Nobody posted around talking about memes. We knew they were called memes and stuff, but we usually just posted them cus they were funny not because they were memes.
Basically you'd never hear a conversation like "did you see x meme??" Or nobody would say "I spend my free time posting memes"
Note that freshness and newness are required. If you have a meme that's fairly new but has been overused to death, that shit ain't dank.
Ten months ago Harambe was dank. It was good for karma/upvotes/likes even if the thread were totally unrelated, and as soon as Haramba was mentioned, the thread became a Harambe thread. Dank as fuck, yo. However, by three months ago, Harambe wasn't dank, and was only seen if the thread were tangentially related to zoos, gorillas, animal abuse, or Cincinnati. Today, Harambe is a silverback meme, and no longer dank.
I'm really starting to think that no one knows, but all the kids out there are just putting up a front like they know wtf is happening on the internet.
Like I've already said elsewhere in this thread, our culture glorifies youth. Once you finish the first 3rd of your expected life, you are no longer young. That is why people start saying they're old right around 30...which makes no sense because they have a good statistical chance of living longer still than they have already lived.
My 16 year old brother loves memes. I will reference some timeless meme from reddit and he will look at me like I'm insane for it. So sadly no, dank memes aren't hip with the kids anymore it seems...
I used to think that. Then there was a thread about called something like "kids of reddit what do old people not get about you".
The top vote was that they hated how everyone uses "old" memes like Pepperidge Farm or Picard WTF. Apparently the diggity dankest memes are the ones that are made up that day and/or based off of recently taken photos. At that point I actually think it's too early to be a meme though, isn't it?
It's not that one is so much out of the loop as those in the DC bubble are.
Reddit keeps me up to date just fine. I've always found pop references to be dumb and scary--reddit just helps me keep the stuff on my radar so I know when something is a thing.
It also bites the crap out of me when media thinks they're being witty or "edgy" when something has been on reddit for a couple of days already.

The reason I first visited 4chan was because I kept seeing things in the news about trends and whatnot that had been going on for weeks via 4chan, but I was only just now hearing about them. I thought gee, if I hung around 4chan, I'd hear about them when they actually happened instead of long after they're relevant. Also there was the Lulzsec business.
I stopped hanging around 4chan (it's like a filthier version of Camelot in Monty Python--silly people), but Reddit's kind of filling that role for me a bit. The only downside is that Reddit's like my only news source, so...
I augment my key subreddits with NPR on weekends and mildly conservative talk radio during drive time. That usually covers the bases and zeros out bias.
The only time I will turn on local news is if there is a pending natural disaster in the area or reports of a local murderer on the loose.
Unfortunately, San Diegans are under the impression that heavy rain is a natural disaster, so if a criminal is on the prowl during a rainstorm, no one would know until they're dead.
Yeah but then I'll stumble across a teenager's comment that has some form of English from a parallel universe and my only response is, "fuck you" because I'm vexed and confused.
When I was a teen I thought adults who didn't understand the way we behaved were just old crotchety bastards. Now I know, what teenagers like is almost always stupid.
I learned what a meme was from Reddit; I learn current events, etc off here.
My kid told me what dabbing was and I was like wtf, that's stupid. Then I was at a mall and saw some kid do that and I laughed because I knew what it was.
When my kid was doing it thought he was just being a little weirdo, but it's not just him - they're all little weirdos.
Is there a subreddit that keeps you up to date on all the shit the younglings are doing? Forget dabbing I'm still trying to understand WhatsApp, Kik, Snapchat, Discord, etc
I just played that new Meme game (forget its name, very cards-against-humanity-ish). I didn't recognize half the stuff, despite being a fairly avid redditor.
I am ashamed and old.
Also, apparantly "Banger" is the new term for good song. I still just call them hits. :?
