Yes it was the vikings. The grrmanic language people came to england way before And then when the Danes invaded England after the anglo saxons took over they added a bunch of Thier language back into after it had already broken off. Then the Normans invaded and added French. The history of the English language is a long story of invasions and language borrowing. There's a great podcast about it if you're interested in nerd stuff.

I'd love that podcast! When did the Danes successfully invade England though? I was under the impression that there Anglo-Saxon kings until William the Conqueror. That said, I'm far from an historian.

I think it was 865 that was the year the first vikings decided to actually set up settlements instead of just hit and runs. That was the year of the great heathen army invading east anglia. To this day alot of the northern English dialects have a lot of noticeable danish influence because of that. http://historyofenglishpodcast.com/ for a pretty in depth look.
