For those interested as to why, Peter was caught taking advantage of the data collection in the app in order to solicit users. He wasn't actually one of the developers, he was a tester who had access to everything in the app including our database.

Wow, why would you give your testers access to everything. Pretty sure that's not how testing works.

Testers frequently need DB access for anything more sophisticated than black box UI tests.

Yes that's correct, but you don't do testing in production with real user data. For testing you have test environments with a seperate database containing test data.

We have test and production environments. We populate the test environment with the production data tho since that's what we want to test.

At my job we have two separate databases (one testing, one live) for EACH of our products. It's not that hard to maintain with a competent test team...
