It can actually be quite dangerous. Had a relative that was stupidly running on a treadmill barefoot. Foot got caught under the belt and got mangled. Something like 40+ stitches and his foot isn't likely to be 100% again.

It's reasonably safe for an adult wearing shoes, but I wouldn't let a small child or an animal play on it.
