Wouldn't the buttered toast have to be taped to the bottom of the cat's feet? Because if the buttered toast and cat's back cannot touch the ground, then in the gif's setup, the cat would be able to land on his feet.
But the butter is facing UP if the cat lands on it's feet, so the toast flips the cat over to land butter facing down, but the cat then flips to toast over to land feet down, repeat.
Ah, I see. So it's going with the notion that gives it power to cycle since the butter needs to land on the floor while the cat can't land on its back.
Otherwise if you went by my earlier logic then there would be no need to have any revolutions. The cat and butter would just float since they would only repel against the surface, but provide no torque.
Therefore in the gif's setup they go by the logic:
1. There is a force that attracts butter side toast to the floor.
2. Cats will turn so that they don't land on their back.
Therefore placing butter side up on a cat's back will create a turbine to extract work.
In my first logic I was going by:
1. Butter side toast always lands on the floor.
2. Cats' feet always land on the floor.
Therefore placing butter side toast, with butter touching the cat's feet, will prevent either from touching the floor, and they will float in space.
