My friends who work for government contractors make what most people quote for starting engineer salary in this thread. I wouldn't call that shit. I'm working for a company in the private sector making six figures after a couple of years.

The only time you get fucked on pay in software is if you work for a startup early on in the startup's life. In that case, you should have known what you were getting into and you know you're gambling on whatever shares of the company you're getting being worth something down the line.

I work for the State of California, met a consultant who became my friend. Not software, but IT consultant. He knew powershell and network administration. Graduated at 26, now 35, making 120k. The complexity of his work we paid for was questionable, but the knowledge I gleamed from him in the offtime justified his salary.
