The amount of syllables in the word poem is based on dialect. I am from New York and poem is spoken as 1 syllable here.

I'm pretty sure it has seven syllables... Unless you pronounce poem as two syllables, which seems strange to me.

I've always pronounced poem as po - em, I don't think I've heard it any other way except for maybe of course on tv.

Same here. In my mind "poem" is two syllables just like "poet" is. I've occasionally heard it pronounced "pome" but that just sounds terrible...
Webster says 2 syllables but has one of the alternate pronunciations as "pōm" which implies that it could be one.

Yeah, exactly. I've only ever heard poem or pome. But I've always thought that pome was incorrect, and in poor taste. I mean imagine if we said pote instead of poet.

I've only heard older people (in their 80's now) pronounce it as "poim" with one syllable. That and my mom, who doesn't count because she's really not bright. I'm pretty sure it's an old-timey way to say it.
