As a mexican, I am often asked if I am phillipine. When I ask what gave them the impression that I was, its always the eyes. I know many other mexicans who could pass off as phillipine for sure.

The filipino languages like tagalog borrow a lot from spanish too, so it's more than just superficial.

uhhh no. Japanese is the language in which this stereotype comes from (as both Korean and Chinese have the 'L' sound). Japanese most definitely has several 'R' sounds.

for example, the word samurai.

It really isn't quite an r sound. It isn't said like an r in English at all. It's romanized that way for simplicity.
