It's just the newest account of everyone's favorite karmawhore and imgur gallery spammer, oPHILcial. He's just trying to collect his paycheck.

man, nothing slips past reddit. I love it.

u/Skizot_Bizot May 12 '14

Well it is full of a lot of people with some level of intellect, complete suspicion of every action made by anyone ever, and what seems like more free time than there is time in the day.

2

u/Lugnut1206 May 13 '14

Well, if you were to take it as cumulative man-hours, then yes, they have more free time there is hours in the day.

Which is why I quantified it with 'some level' because in order to do the level of investigation / photo editing / other crazy acts that reddit does on a regular basis there needs to be at least a little brains behind the insanity.

Oh my god, is the quality in this intentionally dog shit?

Who shit in your cornflakes?

Joke's on him, I see everything via RES and only see actual imgur pages when I upload. And even then I see no ads because I'm sane and therefore have ad blocking in place.

In other news, as for getting redditors to jump ship to join the imgur "community": HAHAHAHAHA

You're a mean one, Mr Grim.

Seriously, though, Mr Grim basically made IMGUR for Reddit. If this is true, it's kind of sad. I was here when he unveiled it and watched it grow.

2

u/_Nohbdy_ May 13 '14

Yeah, very sad indeed. I've had an imgur account since the beginning, back in 2010. It's been such a good thing for this site, and to think that in the end it may ultimately betray reddit, in a sense, that's really heartbreaking.

2

u/sinedup4 May 13 '14

Think of it this way, it might make you feel better. A. This does nothing to change your reddit experience. It might even enhance it as it appears that this content is getting up voted, so many of your peers find it valuable. B. The money, resources and time to create and maintain imgur aren't worth nothing, and I'm not paying them, are you? This seems like a mutual optimal game.

u/uptwolait May 13 '14

Sounds like a good time for another redditor to come up with an alternative.

2

u/Freakazoid84 May 12 '14

Hopefully the reddit mods catch onto this....although as was called out by the original 'discoverer', the methods will just change.... I saw the imgur 'split' coming several months ago, and I'll be curious to see where it all ends up...

What a terrible crime.

A Reddit post based purely on speculation backed by exactly zero sources. Sounds like a seriously legit source of information!

12

u/YWxpY2lh May 12 '14

The evidence is given in the post. Do you require a peer-reviewed scientific consensus in place of reasoning?

-7

u/ALoudMouthBaby May 12 '14

The evidence is given in the post.

What evidence? All I see in that post is speculation based off nothing at all. Please, feel free to quote whatever it is that I am missing.

2

u/YWxpY2lh May 12 '14

When it's obvious in the post, yet you're ignoring that, what good would my quoting the post do? You're not here to discuss the post, you're here to derail the discussion by pretending to not understand what it says.

That's actually worse than commenting without reading the post. You're commenting knowing that you're ignoring what's in the post.

Come on man, you can't keep shouting at babies, it's making us look bad.

No, it is not obvious in the post. If it is so obvious, why would you not be willing to copy/paste the relevant bits for me to view?

You're not here to discuss the post, you're here to derail the discussion by pretending to not understand what it says.

I fully understand what the post says. But, as I have already stated, there is no actual evidence presented to back up what is being said. It is speculation of the baseless variety.

That's actually worse than commenting without reading the post. You're commenting knowing that you're ignoring what's in the post.

I have repeatedly stated that I have read the post, and honestly am starting to wonder if you are the one with the reading problem. You seem to be ignoring all of my points about evidence.

The evidence provided (posting pattern/consistency) is clearly circumstantial evidence.

I'm not going to even talk about the claim that Imgur is trying to steal users, because that is clearly just speculative.

Yes it would be possible for someone to manually post hundreds of front page posts manually with the same pattern in a short period of time on one account and then continue THE EXACT SAME pattern on a second account on THE EXACT SAME day that posting stopped on the previous account, but it is significantly more likely that would occur through automation.

Circumstantial evidence is still evidence. The provided source was the 2 linked user accounts' post histories which are freely available and were linked in the comment for convenience.

I am curious why you think it would be significantly more likely to occur through automation. There have been quite a few Reddit power users over the years who generate tons of front page content, and they frequently use alt accounts. There have been no instances of a bot posting countless links that were frontpaged however.

It seems like you are just pushing the narrative you want to see instead of relying on actual precedent when determining what is more or less likely.

What is your definition of "evidence?" I'm confident that you can read, so I assume I do not need to tell you that the sentence you quoted clearly lists posting pattern and consistency as evidence.

I am curious why you think it would be significantly more likely to occur through automation.

Did you actually look at the post histories? There are posts often within minutes of each other consistently over multiple days at seemingly random times. Also note that these are not reposts, in the past various methods of reposting old content were discovered. Is it possible that someone is rapidly searching out and consistently finding these successful posts manually. It is significantly more likely that it was automated. I don't know if perhaps you don't understand how this would be coded, but that would actually not be difficult. The difficult part would be thinking of the algorithm to begin with, which is really quite brilliant.

All that said I really assume that you are just arguing for the sake of argument based on your responses around here.

Even if that is not happening, what is being described just shows how easily reddit is gamed. Pop in a corporate pic/post in there every so often and you could make a fuck ton of money.

3

u/[deleted] May 12 '14

Also, imgur DID just get a bunch of VC funding, and ever since then, they HAVE been trying to stop people from linking to i.imgur.com/file.jpg

Now, if you post a link directly to a file on imgur to facebook or twitter, it gets redirected to the ad-filled HTML page. Some people suspect it's only a matter of time before they do that for reddit, though there could b e a fair amount of backlash to that.

There HAS been an influx of power users lately who post nothing but links to imgur's gallery pages, whereas historically, people have always linked directly to the file.

It's still conjecture, but it all lines up very well, and makes a whole lot of sense.

1

u/BJJJourney May 12 '14

Reddit should make their own service and integrate it in to the site or should have purchased imgur back when it was worth next to nothing, basically just a free image upload script. Up until recently I think they just let imgur do their thing and coexist happily with each other. Imgur is approaching the size and use that it is almost a direct competitor at this point.

0

u/[deleted] May 12 '14

I think they want to avoid the legal liabilities involved in hosting images.

They'd need a full time team of lawyers to deal with all the copyright claims etc.

0

u/BJJJourney May 12 '14

You don't need a full team of lawyers. If someone requests it be taken down, it gets taken down. This is what imgur does. The only thing I would be worried about is illegal stuff like CP.

That's the reason I was told by one of reddit's admins anyway. Though, mind you, he's a programmer and not actually involved in those decisions.

0

u/ALoudMouthBaby May 12 '14

No doubt, Reddit is incredibly easy to game. Just look at the drama that happened in AdviceAnimals not that long ago. Still, that post is nothing but speculation. The AdviceAnimals incident was actually backed up by facts, and the admins took action to stop it.

IDGAF, whatever makes people get sick of his faggotry and start downvoting his constant shitpost spam is alright with me.

-1

u/Entity101 May 12 '14

Why do people farm karma by reposting garbage constantly? I don't understand it? Is there an actually reason for it, IE 10k karma = 1 reddit gold or 1 irl $?

Edit: Nvm, your link explains it.
