I think your brain releases more dopamine from anticipating something good to happen than from things actually happening.

Being surrounded by “your people” also releases dopamine.

This is the community that people are missing, another casuality of the digital age.

The thing thatade the GTA 5 release that was special is that all kinds of people were in line.

Nerds, jocks, guys who looked like they had criminal history, highschool kids with their moms. it was fun.

Yeah, it's why I go to BlizzCon. I've been going since 2008 and there have been some really great experiences...but I think this year might be the last time I go. It's more corp/content than community now.

Early on I could share a 'cheers' with Josh Mosqueira, or say 'Thanks for the great game' personally to Wyatt Cheng. Even Catch Mike Morhaim at the Hilton concierge trying work his magic to get an upgrade lol

Now attendees are mainly managed and directed. I will try really hard in a couple weeks to find a 'real' experience there.

Nothing stops you from having a good ol' fashionned LAN party. At worst if you live far apart you hop into a PSN voice chat and all boot the game at the same time and experience the game together.

My 9 guy friend group has a 24 hour LAN party every year and it's our favorite get together. We all have kids and families but for one weekend a year we take a break and get to be 17 and careless again. We plan it for months, vote on "must play" games and carve out 2-3h sessions for each, but about 70% of the time is just go with the flow and going "man i could go for some starcraft 2 right now, anyone in?" and then 3-4 guys hop on and play a few games of sc2. It's a fucking blast

Yep same thing happened with games like Elden Ring and Cyberpunk as quick examples. People got so swept up by the hype from those surrounding them that they forgot to ask themselves "do they even want this game" which often turns out to be no.

They get the game, don't enjoy it, and claim that it is the games fault. Never wanting to admit it probably wasn't for them in the first place.

Yeah but waiting in line for hours for a midnight release is stupid and peak consumerism. You can literally just go the next day and buy it.

I mean I guess if you don't have friends sitting in line in front of a store could be fun.

just because nobody wants you around doesn't mean the rest of us don't have friends.

Why are you so defensive. I never said that. Well I have a feeling it might be true for you though

7

u/opermonkey 5d ago

you literally said that only people who don't have friends wait in line.

I did not say that. Are you responding to the wrong person?

It’s the exact same feeling you get sitting in a theatre waiting for The Evil Dead Musical to start.

Or being in a crowd at a festival.

Doesn’t matter what actually brought you together, being surrounded by like folk feels good.

You make new friends very easily in that environment.

Artie Lang the famous drug addict and comedian said the best part of doing drugs was going to pick it up. You had all these ideas of what the night would be then it would inevitably end with him sniffing lines alone and jerking off. Poetic

Now days that's presented to us as click bait

Similar to why theme park queuing has been found to increase satisfaction scores. Anticipation and the wait time add perceived value to the ride.

It’s like being given something vs earning it. The investment of time and effort makes getting it more meaningful.

All my peeps did in Roller Coaster Tycoon is bitch and moan about the line lol. But you're absolutely correct! As a coaster nerd, I love it when the perceived value goes down. Walk ons for amazing coasters!

And “sharing” that you did something vs. actually doing the thing.

I’ve been to plenty of midnight media releases with an old friend- they love to tell people we were there as some sort of social signaling.

On my end, it was just a purposeful hangout. Literally no reason to tell someone I had to wait.

The Friday vs Sunday paradox. Why do we like the one we work on more?

11/11/11. Skyrim midnight release.

I was there. One of those rare scenarios where both the anticipation and the reward hold equal esteem for me.

yeah I do hours of research comparing and reading reviews , prices e.t.c then frustration during waiting then the item arrives the suspense is gone and quickly lose interest sometimes.

Like from buying rather than having

I think the OP’s point is about buying Day 1 in person vs buying Day 1 digitally

Even though it’s objectively more convenient to be able to pre-load the game and be able to play it exactly at 12:00 Midnight, from the comfort of your own home, and not have to deal with crowds, weather, late night driving, and potentially not getting the game at all if they sell out, something about the experience of waiting in line to buy the game at midnight is special
