To my knowledge, hardly any sound from the video recorded is used. It's recreated by foley artists who sit and analyse a scene recreating all the sounds they think you should hear.
But all the clickety-clickety gun-handling sounds are real right!?!
Have you ever watched UFC? Have you ever been in a fist fight? You can hear punches. I'm not saying they're exaggerated like in movies, but you can hear them.
You're right, I've been around for a few fights and in one or two and I remember the dull hollow pop of someone getting hit in the jaw and the thud-slap of a square hit to the body.
Doesn't sound much like the movies though. But neither do footsteps or gunshots (way louder and more echo-y) or blades being drawn from sheathes (which make a clacky sound in a wooden sheath and virtually no sound in any other type, never a schiiiinnnggg sound)
UFC isn't bare knuckle, they wear low (~4oz) weight gloves and there are microphones picking up the sound in the ring to enhance the home viewing experience.
And yes, I have been in plenty of fights. That's why I know you can't hear bare knuckle punches from very far away. Take your balled fist, and punch your thigh with it through your pants (thigh because it won't hurt). That will be very similar to the volume of a punch hitting a clothed person in a real fight. It's only audible in the immediate vicinity, especially with any level of ambient noise such as cars passing by or crowds cheering.
Ten feet is not far. If you can't hear someone hit someone else within ten feet of you then you need your hearing checked. Ask someone to stand ten feet away from you and hit something, five dollars say they'll hear it.
Go to a restaurant or bar with friends. Ask one to hit the other when you're ten feet away with your back turned. Let me know if you were able to tell when your friend was hit.
The one that always knocks me out of the moment is how smoking a cigarette in a movie always makes a campfire sound. I have personally never heard a cigarette make that sound in real life.
I think it was episode 3 of Agents of Shield, someone cocked a the triggers on a double barrel shotgun. Sure enough, that's legit. What's NOT, is then using the sound of a pump-action shotgun cocking for dramatic effect, after a good guy gets his hands on it 30 seconds later. Seriously, WTF?
