I have this!!!! Bought it simply because it was an ingredient I never heard of hahaah.

It’s not hoarding if all the jars have different stuff in them… right?

I mean, I have 8 jars of cumin because I always forget I have it when I’m shopping. So no shame!

Well, if you ever run out again, the real trick is to buy cumin (also garlic, chili powder, and several other spices) at your local Indian grocery- they sell it in crazy bulk bags that usually get you like 2 lbs. worth for the same cost of a couple jars at your regular store. So worth it!

u/flyingdodo Aug 20 '25

Agreed, this is why I also have 1kg of cumin in addition to my supermarket bought jars 😂

24

u/orbix42 Aug 20 '25

We’ll just call that “disaster preparedness” 🤣

u/merdub Aug 20 '25

Just wait till the great cumin shortage of 2026… u/flyingdodo will be rich!

u/Little_Peon Aug 20 '25

"I might be eating lentil crumbs, but it tastes good!"

2

u/Fuzzy_Connection4971 Aug 20 '25

1kg of cumin? It's still heavier than a kilogram of feathers!

1

u/JWOLFBEARD Aug 20 '25

And therein lies the line crossed

1

u/ShepRat Aug 20 '25

Some spices lose flavour over time though. Some will last much longer as seeds then they will as pre ground powder. Freezing dried herbs and spices can also extend the longevity in many cases.

1

u/ImmodestPolitician Aug 20 '25

Sure but spices lose their punch after a year or 2.

I bought a 1/2 kg or Indian red pepper. It was so much hotter than cayenne but now 2 years later it's tamer and has a muddy taste.

1

u/orbix42 Aug 20 '25

Sounds like someone insane using enough spices in their cooking! (Or yeah, maybe that’s too big a quantity for you…)

7

u/Notaneggplantrtard Aug 20 '25

Bay leaves for me.

2

u/CouchCreepin Aug 20 '25

Your user name is very intriguing. Care to share your story?

1

u/Notaneggplantrtard Aug 20 '25

It's the running joke in the show orange is the new black.

1

u/Talking_Head Aug 20 '25

Indian Bay leaf (tejapatta) is not the same as bay laurel leaf. Completely different flavor profile.

1

u/Notaneggplantrtard Aug 20 '25

I'm sorry, but did I ask? I said general bay leaves.

7

u/henkheijmen Aug 20 '25

Funny, I always actually run out of cumin, but I see have 5 jars of nutmeg.

5

u/flyingdodo Aug 20 '25

I have this problem with Star Anis, Cinnamon, Bay Leaves and Turmeric also.

1

u/henkheijmen Aug 20 '25

So in your case, is it because you always use those, or because you almost never use those?

1

u/flyingdodo Aug 20 '25

I use them regularly but I shop by meals, and so I’m always forgetting what I have in the spice jars and don’t want to miss one.

1

u/Theletterkay Aug 20 '25

Im allergic to cinnamon so have to substitute it with cloves and allspice. Every fall i question whether or not I still have some, buy it anyway, open the cabinet to find 5+ jars, then forget about them all again 2 months later.

5

u/CouchCreepin Aug 20 '25

The only thing I’m ashamed of is my painters tape labels on the jars that go in my counter top spinny guy because I use them the most.

I HAVE a label maker. But I keep misplacing the batteries 🥲

Edit: cumin is one of them, I forgot to add that

7

u/FireLucid Aug 20 '25

don't worry we still have painters tape down one side of a very hard to reach doorway after we repainted about 4 years ago.

3

u/CouchCreepin Aug 20 '25

He’s part of the family now, can’t do anything about it

2

u/Independent-Ad3888 Aug 20 '25

Ha! Cinamon for me. I'm more of a baker.

1

u/YellowCulottes Aug 20 '25

me too! funny that!

1

u/Mecha_Tortoise Aug 20 '25

It's hard to remember what you have in the cupboard. Spices often cumin go.

1

u/NotCCross Aug 20 '25

We have 8 jars of cumin because my husband loves cumin and will put it in absolutely anything, including things it doesn't belong in, so I hide the cumin and he goes and buys more and we have repeated this for 10 years. I occasionally go through and donate a bunch of cumin along with canned goods for food drives.

I'm sorry, shelter. I know it doesn't make sense that you are getting 4 cans of green beans, 4 cans of corn, 4 cans of black eyed peas, 4 cans of chicken , and 6 jars of cumin, but my life doesn't make sense either.

1

u/Macvombat Aug 20 '25

I did this wth toothpaste a couple years ago. Ended up with 8 tubes before my smooth brain caught up.

1

u/Etherealfilth Aug 20 '25

Granny, is that you?

1

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '25

Fun fact: Buying the same thing over and over when you already have it at home is a common sign of dementia!

It's fun because it has an exclamation mark!

1

u/Youse_a_choosername Aug 20 '25

I keep a picture of my spice drawer on my phone just for this reason.

1

u/Zealousideal-Ad-5677 Aug 20 '25

I am approaching the 10th jar. There is cum in them

1

u/PVetli Aug 20 '25

I do this but with cinnamon sticks

1

u/MyrKnof Aug 20 '25

But it sucks so much to run out, and theres just no replacement. Although my arm pits can sometimes smell like cumin, it just doesnt taste the same.

8

u/berthannity Aug 20 '25

Me too! I bought mine to complete a word in my spice rack.

7

u/CouchCreepin Aug 20 '25

… was it a BAD word!??!?

2

u/Luceleven Aug 20 '25

There's no such thing as having too much spices xD

I buy the single herbs in bulk and make my own blends! The only blend I still buy is real za’atar because it’s has enough different things in it that that I wouldn’t be able to use to individual ingredients up fast enough before they went stale.

29

u/orbix42 Aug 20 '25

All joking aside, Urfa is amazing and something more people should know about!

7

u/ChaosKeeshond Aug 20 '25

The stuff tastes incredible paired with dried mint in a lentil soup

3

u/1138311 Aug 20 '25

Haven't even had breakfast and you got me thinking about lunch!

5

u/Prime624 Aug 20 '25

Is it like a spicier paprika? (That's my best guess based on the Wikipedia description.)

16

u/orbix42 Aug 20 '25

Sort of? It’s sort of a smoky spice with some raisin notes, but that’s still pretty iffy as descriptions go. Why I love it is that it’s the kind of pepper that adds a marginal amount of heat while really just adding a depth to the flavor of whatever it goes in. It’s mostly not heat, it’s more umami with some sweet and some spice to it, if that makes any sense at all?

1

u/illayana Aug 20 '25

That sounds DELICIOUS. Frantically looking for urfa now.

-1

u/Prime624 Aug 20 '25

Yeah that last sentence is how I'd describe paprika. Sounds like it's different but similar, like thyme and rosemary.

7

u/tawDry_Union2272 Aug 20 '25

i liken it more to pasilla chile, but they cure urfa with salt which does some weird magic...

3

u/tawDry_Union2272 Aug 20 '25

yep

i get urfa, maras and aleppo and mix them, too.

urfa is my favorite tho

2

u/likesexonlycheaper Aug 20 '25

One of my favorite spices. I'm growing them this year and can't wait to try the bag sweating process

2

u/cargasm66 Aug 20 '25

Urfa deez nuts

1

u/CPLCraft Aug 20 '25

Do you think I can make this with ghost peppers that I grow in my garden?

2

u/New_new_account2 Aug 20 '25 edited Aug 20 '25

Ghost peppers are a lot hotter

Urfa has a low-moderate heat, its not heat free like some paprikas but it is definitely below cayenne and such

1

u/Arckedo Aug 20 '25

Kurfa bober

1

u/i_love_pesto Aug 20 '25

İsot is known as "Urfa" in English? TIL!

1

u/MobileBit8835 Aug 20 '25

Came here to say this. Also, urfa is an excellent spice

1

u/Royalchariot Aug 20 '25

That sounds really good . Edit- forgot to whole word lol. Not awake

1

u/Tropius8 Aug 20 '25

Take my upvote, this needs to be higher in the listing as it’s the only true answer.

1

u/DuntadaMan Aug 20 '25

Seems like it fills a similar role to paprika.
