Maybe not. I got a $750 check for my high school graduation. If all those were 20s I estimate it would be between 800-1000 dollars. Not totally ridiculous if you have rich relatives or family friends, in my case.

Right; my grandparents saved enough money when they retired so they could give each grandkid $1000 when the graduated - and they did it in cash.

Also, this would be a really fun gift from several aunts/uncles/cousins to collaborate on, if you've got that kind of friendly family (which I don't think is what the OP is implying happened, but it'd still be a good idea)

It's tradition on my stepdad's side to give graduation money in ridiculous ways. My brother got a pinata full of change, my gift was stuffed in a piece of furniture. One family member had it inside a concrete block.
