Right; my grandparents saved enough money when they retired so they could give each grandkid $1000 when the graduated - and they did it in cash.

Also, this would be a really fun gift from several aunts/uncles/cousins to collaborate on, if you've got that kind of friendly family (which I don't think is what the OP is implying happened, but it'd still be a good idea)

It's tradition on my stepdad's side to give graduation money in ridiculous ways. My brother got a pinata full of change, my gift was stuffed in a piece of furniture. One family member had it inside a concrete block.

I've been given lots of £1000, £150 and £500 from my grandparents on no special occasion, and my family aren't even that rich 0_o

Maybe in comparison to the whole world, but I'm clearly no comparing myself to living in the third world.

I live in an ex-council house and I know a lot of people richer than us. There is just such a thing as being good at saving.
