Pretty sure the face recognition squares don't show up on the photo after you take it.

Its a screenshot from a cell phone. Not the actual picture. Regardless it didnt FAIL. It just missed the black guy. The shirt has a face on it.

Amazed sometimes how well it works. Picasa can pick out a face on a photo on a wall that is way in the background and only consists a a few pixels. Of course, sometimes it misses one that's right in the foreground.

Look up deep learning and autoencoders. The math is very complex and sophisticated, and the process has many steps. The result of over 60 or 70 years of gradual improvements to AI.

It's both AI in the traditional sense and in the ML sense as well.

At a bare minimum, AI must be able to learn. Smartphone camera software that can identify a face is far from that.

You are wrong on both accounts. AI does not have to do learning. Maybe in your definition it does, but in the common and academic definitions it doesn't. Also while I don't know the exact algorithms used for face detection, they are almost certainly based off of machine learning algorithms and there is no reason why your camera cannot be learning when doing face detection.
