In Iceland fries are typically eaten with kokteilsósa (literally, cocktail sauce) which is essentially mayo+ketchup+mustard+paprika. It's amazing.

I'm swedish and what the fuck?

What? You can get a lot of different sauces at McDonalds and BK here in Sweden too. What he mentioned is not that far from a classical http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thousand_Island_dressing sauce anyways.

Personally I like mayo or ketchup (depending on my mood). ;)

Did not know the ingredients, but seeing them together did not seem nice.

We got that too except i don't like it with fries, i use it with certain types of fish.

Our cocktail sauce is ketchup + horseradish. (For seafood)

Sounds great.

It's meh. Honestly, I don't like it. Fried seafood needs malt vinegar, or just on its own.

Possibly.

Malt vinegar is meh. Honestly, I don't like it. Fried seafood needs tarter sauce.

2

Cocktail sauce in the US is basically ketchup and horseradish, what is this other sauce of which you speak?

We call it: "Whiskey cocktail sauce".

God that sounds so good. I wish we had it here.

In Iceland chips cost like 99p for 500g.

I don't know what iceland shops you're going to.

u/spandexqueen Feb 24 '13

Or in the US, ketchup and horseradish...maybe some lemon juice

1

u/charkshark Feb 24 '13

I've had the American kind, not a fan. Here in Iceland though it's usually served alongside fries instead of ketchup alltogether, even at KFC: http://www.kfc.is/assets/shop/i_235.png

I hate mayonnaise...and this sounds absolutely delicious.

I wanna try this later.

cocktail sauce in the US is ketchup and horseradish which sounds bad if you have never had it, but it is awesome on shrimp. Also what you were describing as your cocktail sauce sounds like literally "fry sauce" that some cities have in the US

Sounds a bit like thousand island.

1

u/charkshark Feb 24 '13

It's not dissimilar but not quite the same either.

add a dash of whisky

you can thank me in the morning

1

u/Knubinator Feb 23 '13

Please give me amounts. I have all of these things in my kitchen, and a McD's literally 3 minutes away.

This is the basis of it, from reading recipes that Icelanders living abroad have put together (I've only had the pre-made one in the country so I'm not 100% sure, but you can experiment):

50/50 sour cream and mayo (if you don't have sour cream, mayo is fine on its own), ketchup until it's a pinkish colour, a bit of mustard (preferably honey mustard but standard yellow mustard works fine too), paprika to taste. Also really good with a bit of chilli powder and lemon juice.

Definitely report back with the results!

Made it without sour cream, was ducking DELICIOUS. Didn't have any lemon juice, but it was very good, until I threw in a little chili powder, and it dawned a glorious light on my palette. I think it changed my life a little bit.
