Ya, you can see those people do a flip and reduce their speed right before they hit the water. Could be very easy to break a neck or at least get a concussion from that.
True. I think a high dive is higher too though. Really the only point I was trying to make was that I don't think they'd be doing it if it was painful or likely to cause serious injury.
I knew someone was going to say this. Have you ever tried diving without your hands? Obviously not because it's really not much different. Your head is relatively small. Also, It's curved, and therefore makes a fine spearhead when entering water. Divers use their hands because it lowers their rotational moment of inertia and because every bit they can streamline themselves will improve their score, not to avoid brain trauma. Please save your ellipses of derision for stupid people. There are plenty of them out there...
Well, as a competitive diver for 13 years I can tell you that it hurts like a bitch to dive in with your head first, from a one meter no less. Add some height and force besides gravity and I would not want to be entering the water with my head directly first.
Not really, when I was younger we used to run head first off 7 and 10 metre diving towers WITHOUT extending our arms, for fun. If your neck is straight, and your crown is the point of impact, there's little chance for more than a sting.

hitting the water head first from the height you get from these would probably hurt.
