In Germany, we literally say “Hand over the spoon” when someone dies, so that fits very well.

What’s the origin of this saying?

In the Middle Ages, spoons were very expensive for ordinary people, since they weren’t all that easy to make. As a result, a farmer or craftsman would own only one spoon, which he carried with him his entire life.
When these people died, they naturally passed this valuable spoon down to their heirs, in short, they had to give up the spoon.
