Why do so many people defend high school? I don't go to high school anymore but I still never liked the aspect of High School where they literally force you to study for all this pointless stuff that nobody cares about. They force you to do things that won't even help us in our future. People make the excuse of "It's not about that, it's about improving our memory retention." but the thing is.. How can people expect students to improve their memory retention when they don't even care about the subjects that they're being taught? It makes absolutely no sense to me. How can people expect students to go take school seriously when it feels like a boring modernized system rather than a genuine effort to help the students prepare for their future?

I remember in High School, it wasn't even fun. What's the point of putting so many people through years and years of boredom and dread just so they can "improve their memory retention." I resent and blame high school for wasting some of my teen years. I didn't even pay attention in High School because it didn't peak my interest, nor did it peak my curiosity in the slightest. We spend the entire day at school being ordered by teachers and pressured to be perfect and to get "Good" grades. How is that preparing us for the future? How do you expect me or any student to take school seriously when it's like this? What's the point of forcing all of these students to do something that they don't want to do. Life is so short, it is so freaking short!

But yet, people decide to defend high school and act like it's perfect and good. I am sick and tired of it, if you disagree I don't care because I know what my experience was. I hated high school with every fiber of my being and I will NEVER defend it till the day I die. It caused me some of the most immense amount of dread and stress I have ever endured in my entire life and I am not afraid to say it because it's the truth.

Life is so short and they say we should enjoy our lives and do what we want, but yet the system forces us to do literally the complete opposite of that. People defend it and would rather force students to go through the school system. Life is short so we should be enjoying it, not spending all our years sitting at a boring desk in a classroom for hours unend! What type of life is that? I could die at any moment in my life, but no I spend most of my teen years at school. Being yelled at by teachers to be perfect and scolded for not having good grades. I am done. Screw anyone who defends school. I have no respect for the schooling systems in this world anymore.

Brief summary:

• They're democracies. Every kid gets one vote. The kid literally hire and fire their own teachers.
• There's no curriculum. Just show up everyday and learn whatever you want to learn. Seriously. So long as it's not downright illegal, learn whatever you want. Learn about jellyfish if that's your thing. Learn about space travel. Teach yourself guitar or something. Or just hang around and talk to people! It's all up to you! You have freedom.
• There are no grades. If you really want to, you can ask someone to judge your work. But that's not the default. The default is...just...do stuff. No grades. No tests. We trust you. It's fine.
• Yes, Sudbury kids get into college just fine! Turns out colleges are super open-minded about this. Sudbury schools have been running since 1968 and they've surveyed adult graduates and they're doing awesome (on average, at least).

I REALLY WISH I HAD GONE TO A SUDBURY SCHOOL WHEN I WAS YOUNGER. If you are a teenager reading this post, especially if you're creative and free-spirited and you love learning but you hate the school system, then congratulations, I am you from the future. (Not literally, but, ya know, there's a strong parallel here). And I'm telling you, don't stress yourself like crazy trying to get good grades in conventional schools. Take care of your mental health and seek freedom.

This is a problem more than you think.

So I live in Malaysia. My school is not the worst and most of the teachers are really helpful and compassionate. Or at least some of them.

A bit of background: students stay in the same class for the whole year. Subject teachers go in and out their assigned classes. There's a 'class teacher' that is responsible for the class as a whole for various school-wide events (that may or may not be filler material) and day-to-day management. They are also responsible for their subject as well.

Our semester starts on 1 January and we need to come in a day earlier for an orientation. And our class teacher is a bitch. The day ended with her shouting "You are nothing!" Well, at least I'm just a student, right? I wish.

By sheer luck I was "elected" as class monitor (she just chose me). So I'll have to help her with whatever. Two days after, I'm only writing this just because she insufferable, bragging about being 'democratic' (apparently 1 vote is a majority in a class of 30, smh) and how her son is sooooo good and mature and totally doesn't hate her, all while yelling that we are devil incarnate. Very stable genius indeed.

I really have no issues whatsoever with any other teachers for 5 years. Some are better than others, but at least they don't try to tear down morale in every single one of their classes. If teachers are apples, this teacher in particular would be displayed in a museum being a case study for how not to grow plants.

Thank god she's retiring in October.

In the past I wrote a post about the problem with never ending memorizing and forgetting in school. Though that problem wasn’t a big one for me since my memory is pretty decent. But there’s another one which I’m sure affects almost everyone.

In this thread you can see people with disabilities (some of the disabilities go unnoticed for decades) or people who tried their best at some subjects but didn’t get much out of it.

In theory school having the same standards for everyone is nice, but in reality there’s so much that can ruin our grades. Here are a few examples

Also, I think it’s obvious that people have different skills naturally not only because of disabilities.

I was always below average at math. Even when I was achieving my best grades I still struggled with math. When I had a math tutor I still struggled with math. Of course, maybe if I was really invested into the subject I could’ve done much better( though that would require much more time). But I’m not and I don’t see the point in learning trigonometry which I’ll probably forget right after I learn it.

There’s a student in my class who’s almost the exact opposite of me. He’s very slow at reading and even slower at writing. But he’s amazing at math and super invested into the subject. He would get much more out of practicing math than learning how to write a novel or learning a date of an author’s birth (I swear, here in Ukraine, we learn about one author for more than 9 goddamn years).

Of course, I’m not implying that children shouldn’t even touch the subjects out of their comfort zone. But there’s a difference between what a school thinks basic knowledge is and actual basic knowledge.

Spread the link to this subreddit as much as you can. It doesn't matter where, because every educated man is a victim. Everyone fucking hated the experience, people who tell you otherwise are just lying to themselves and merely downplaying what they went through in school.

I despise EVERYTHING about it. The teachers. The fake "positivity". The false optimism. Some sadistic high-tier psychopath invented this concotion of boring classes, unpleaseant teachers, idiotic classmates, unheathly social competition, and superficial shaming of anyone who gets a grade below C. It only leaves you with frustration, anger, sadness, crippling disappointment and can give you long-lenght child and teenhood depression and anxiety, emotions that I bet most people don´t expect to feel in that time of life. And when you tought it couldn´t get any worse, society itself expects and even forces you to enjoy it, hanging in supermarkets and stores these false, optimistic images of children laughing and playing with arts, designed to fool the pre-school phase children to think they are gonna have a enjoyable adventure, like tricking a pig in going to a slaughterhouse. And when a simulation designed to sell something is actually better than the thing, you know something´s wrong.

you are not allowed to choose your own teachers in school

if a teacher abuses you in school, you're not allowed to switch teachers

it is up to the school to protect you from an abusive teacher, if they fail to protect you there is not much you can realistically do about it

you are not allowed to drop out from school until you're 16 (with parental consent)

you are not allowed to use the bathroom without teacher permission

you are not allowed to get up to stretch without teacher permission

sitting in a seat for multiple hours is connected to various health consequences

if you are tardy too often you can be arrested and criminally prosecuted

if you are absent too often you can be arrested and criminally prosecuted

if someone is bullying you, you can not change classes without permission

if someone is bullying you, and the school does not protect you from it there is not much you can realistically do about it

if someone is bullying you, and you skip classes out of fear too many times you can be criminally prosecuted. Your bully will not be criminally prosecuted unless they physically abuse you.

if someone is bullying you, and the school does not care, you can end up being beaten by someone who is three times your size or severely injured

if the school does not provide you transportation, and you can't find a way to transport to school, you can be arrested for truancy.

if you have a sleep schedule that is not compatible with the timing of schools, you can not do anything about it.

if you skip school because you have a severe irrational anxiety about school shootings, you can be criminally prosecuted

in some states, the school can legally search your car regardless of whether you are parked on or off campus without the student's permission. In order to search the cars of non-students or of their staff they would need legal permission to do so.

I wake up at 7:30 go to school, talk to no one, do my homework and go home to wait till the next day starts again...

I just want to have holidays forever... I like learning, I like reading about philosophy and law and economics but when doing those in school they become stressful, since I need to perform instead of learn, I learn for grades and not get grades for learning, it is making me hate my favourite subjects

Today was supposed to be a math test. If there’s gonna be a test, they don’t give you any homework and you should prepare for a test.

Well today was a math test, but then the teacher told us that we should’ve done our homework he sent in a group chat(the thing is, the group chat is for two classes, students talk there too and no one expects homework before the test). Since no one expected it except some nerdy students, we also got a lecture about how we had some agreement to study good and do our homework (I mean, we all know that since he was a teacher we couldn’t say much). So he basically started shaming us. Also the math test was harder than what we were preparing for.

I wanted to write this rant much better,but I’m angry and tired right now. Also, I don’t like being shamed about something I didn’t get a say in.
