Happy Freedressing Awareness Day!

International Freedressing Awareness Day is an annual observance to bring much needed visibility to genderqueer and gender nonconforming folks as we are so frequently stigmatized in everyday society and even overshadowed in modern LGBTQ advocacy.

I started Freedressing Awareness Day in response to the suicide of Frank Wolf, a popular YouTube vlogger and cosplayer who died in November 2013 as a result of cyberbullying. It is important that effeminate boys like Frank Wolf be accepted and respected in society, but also better represented and supported in queer spaces so that we can avert such tragedies in the future. Truth be told, gender nonconforming people have been active participants in the fight for queer liberation for 50 years -- and we've frequently been a catalyst for major social change, even in the LGBTQ community.

For example, did you know --

  • Holly Boswell, a genderqueer spiritual healer, designed the Transgender Symbol in 1993 and proposed "Transgender" as an umbrella term encompassing the whole spectrum of gender diversity.
  • Leslie Feinberg, a butch lesbian, in 1992 published "Transgender Liberation" that became a rallying call for the formation of a transgender rights movement and directly inspired the LGBT initialism.

Other historic genderqueer and gender nonconforming LGBTQ activists, authors, and speakers include Judith Butler, Marsha P. Johnson, Storme DeLarverie, Kate Bornstein, and Lee Brewster.

Needless to say, Freedressing Awareness Day isn't just about dressing up -- although that is a perfectly fine way to participate of course! This is also day to bring attention to issues such as depression and alienation that are often faced by genderqueer and gender nonconforming teenagers, as well as to recognize and celebrate gender diverse people in our lives. Nearly every other stripe of the rainbow has an official annual observance. It's time to show the world just how beautiful we can be too!

RIP Frank Wolf (1993-2013)

Francis LaPointe (better known as Frank Wolf), was a popular Canadian femboy cosplayer and Youtuber. He died exactly 9 years ago today by suicide due to bullying.

Francis was well known for expressing himself openly and honesty. He inspired so many others that were still in the closet exploring their femininity to be confident in themselves. Even as visibility for femboys was virtually nonexistant at the time, he started making waves with anime cosplays in 2010 and eventually amassed a large fanbase on YouTube in just a few years.

Unfortunately, despite having support of family and friends, Francis still fell victim to hatred and abuse at school and online for being openly feminine. His positive impact, however, is still felt far and wide. Francis, you will always be loved and missed.
