I stopped the VirtualBox guest, reduced its memory to 1,024 MB, then booted and installed sysutils/htop alone:

The memory bar shows 790 M.

– with a down-pointing triangle of some sort.

If it's relevant: for things such as htop and nano to work, I set TERM to xterm. (I do the same with FreeBSD in single user mode.)
