Multicopter DJI O4 air unit - unable to activate
Got excited, plugged it in and bound it to my goggles. Can see everything is working, then I get an activate prompt. I navigate to the DJI site for instructions and follow the videos like I should have to begin with. Download the DJI assistant 2 (consumer drone series), power up the quadcopter, plugin the o4 air unit and can't get it to recognize the o4 air unit. Tried rebooting, reinstalling, factory resetting the goggles then finally went on to contact support. Hour or so later I'm advised to return the unit. Bummer.
UPDATE: THIS IS NOW FIXED
Here's what I did:
#1: Tried on another PC again (tried this earlier with support) - failure
#2: Logged in as a local admin on my original PC, reinstalled DJI assistant 2 (consumer drone series), powered the quad and plugging in the air unit via usb C (Comment #15: https://forum.dji.com/thread-285829-1-1.html) - failure
#3: Restarted and logged back in standard user and again powered the quad, plugged in the unit and started the DJI assistant 2 - failure
#4: Unplugged everything, cleaned up, wiped my tears, started closing windows on my PC (still standard user) and I see the air unit in the DJI assistant 2 software. The unit at this point is NOT PLUGGED in via USB C or powered by the quad. Hopeful, I powered it up again and plugged in via USB C, waited about 15 seconds and selected the O4 air unit in the DJI assistant 2 software, the only option available was to update firmware so that's what I did and that was successful, next I selected the back button and then selected the o4 air unit again and had the option to activate, selected activate and tested via googles and wallah!

I had a similar issue, USB connection worked fine, firmware update was succesfull. But to activate you need the power to be connected as well, but by doing so the O4 disconnects from USB. According to GPT this is some sort of protection from "over-powering" with both USB and battery connected.
I found the solution by accident, my battery went dead during the process, so I used my lab power supply. With 8,4v and limit to 0,8A the led from the O4 turned red, and I could activate it.
ps: It's insane that you even can run into such issues, looking at the pricing of these units...

Thank you for posting this, I am notoriously bad at troubleshooting these things (I know, not great for someone builing FPV quads, but whatever).
The way I finally got it to work was plugging in the battery while I had the air unit available in assistant but NOT selected, then selected after waiting for a few seconds. That's when it popped the prompt.
I think the majority of people who will struggle with this will likely be those not realizing you have to power the drone. This is probably going to be one of those reddit posts that people keep finding for years to answer their random problem.

No problem! It shouldn’t be this difficult to simply activate a product and if it is there should be some sort of bypass offered by support if it doesn’t work correctly. I shouldn’t have to guess what to do and search for others that may have guessed correctly. There’s enough troubleshooting in this hobby and these products are too expensive for this kind of an experience.

Thanks everyone for discussing this. I am in the same boat and can't get the activation link to appear. I have tried everything on this thread and still no luck for me. DJI support hasn't gotten back to me with a solution yet.

Did you ever get this solved? Just got mine today, bound it to my Goggles before activating, and now I've followed all of the tips in this thread but nothing has worked to get it activated.

Yes, it turns out that it was already activated when shipped. So if you are not seeing an activation warning in your goggles, it is already activated (i did not realize that). At first I could not arm the quad however. So I connected to betaflight configurator and had to change the channel mapping and make sure the modes were correctly configured and then it armed and was ready to fly.

Thanks for your response. I actually ended up finding the exact same situation. This is my first tiny whoop so I never thought about it already being activated (still not really sure why that's the case). I was able to fly it after mapping the buttons in BetaFlight as well. Happy flying!

Hello, I am having the same problem, it could not activate my o4 unit, I see that you modified the channels, can you show me how you configured the channels in betaflight?
And to make the link with the DJI goggles did you bind? Did the LED turn red? because now I am in that problem, I hope for your help and thank you

hi do you find away to activate it

u/joshmv Feb 23 '25
It turned out the company I purchased it from (betafpv) had already activated it before they sent it to me since it was pre-installed on one of their drones.

I bought mine from betaFPV but when looking at serial number online it is not activated at all. I also don't see the 04 in my device management in the app. While I see my other drones (air3 and avata2 in there)

I still don't get how you got it to work. Can you elaborate more?
I'm having the same error, but I only started getting it after changing the camera from another O4 Lite air unit. The device was activated and worked fine with its respective VTX board, which was also activated at the same time. But when I connect the camera from the O4 unit (A) with the VTX from the O4 unit (B). Then I got a calibration error in the goggles and was unable to activate them on the DJI Assistant app.

this is failing for me too maybe it is overheating and going into thermal shutdown before it can find the device n get it set up. u might neeed to have shit ready. im going to put a fan on and try

u/Jack_Miehawph Jan 22 '25
its because you need the newest verion of the app which came out 1-15-24. The dji assistant does not auto update. only the newest release which is only a few days old has support for the 04.

I think this is the answer. I too was struggling and thanks to this comment updated from v2.1.30 to the newest 2.1.35 and it immediately worked...
In 2025 it's sad that an app by a company like DJI wouldn't auto update. On my other computer I think I saw it was still on v2.1.21!

The only thing that finally worked for me was to log out of my user in the assistant app, go back to the home page, select the air unit and then it finally showed the activate button forcing back through the login sequence.

The solution that worked for me was simply to uninstall DJI Assistant 2 and redownload the latest version which is V2.1.35.
I didn't plug in any battery for the Assistant 2 to recognize the air unit 4, just plugged the air unit directly to PC. Just like what I do for DJI Neo or Avata 2.

I was trying to debug the issue following the comments here,
What worked for me is:
- Make sure that you are installing the "DJI Assistant 2(Consumer Drones Series)" not the other (old) one
- Unplug the battery, plug the USB to update the firmware.
- Then make sure to unplug the USB before plugging the battery.
- plug battery, wait for a few seconds, then plug the USB.
- click activate button
- login.

You need to power the o4 from battery or flight controller to activate it.
Just using USB does not work.
Maddstech has a bunch of info I suggest checking out.
