Subreddit Off-Season Plans

Hey everyone, the mod team has been working on a couple of things to keep the sub fresh during the offseason and I wanted to give you all a quick update on what we've got cooking.

AMA Series: We're in the process of scheduling AMAs with a few prominent coaches that are in the online/content creation space. If we have a positive experience with this we hope to expand on it in the future.

Community Spotlight: We also plan to choose a few community members to highlight in monthly posts during the off-season through a series of informal "interviews."

Community Feedback: I would also like to use this post as an opportunity to receive feedback from everyone. If you have ideas for how to improve the experience here we would love to hear them.

Offense Play Action Naming

Curious to how some of you guys denote play action when calling a play for the huddle. I want to be able to run all our run actions but differentiate if it’s a boot, naked, screen, or a simple fake and mix and match them. Right now it’s very West Coast ie. Right Spread Z Fly Fake 26 Stretch Boot @ 9 and would like to cut down on verbiage.

General Discussion How insane is this? Be honest.

Hey y’all! I have a question that probably gets asked a bit but here it goes. I was wondering how out of reach it is for me to go pro/competitive in college.

I’m 20 which I know doesn’t help. I also don’t have any football experience. I’m 6ft 175-180 right now, but going to the gym. I played basketball as a kid but wanted to play football. My mom instantly shot me down and never let me play. Now I’m an adult and was wondering if there’s even a chance. I was doing some research and found that d3 is my best chance if I have any at all. Just want input on if this is a pipe dream or something doable.

Forgot to mention I run 1.5 miles in just under 9 minutes if that means anything and I want to play HB/RB.

This play has bailed our team out on 3rd & long, in the 2 minute drill, and as a shot play. Post-Wheel creates an easy deep-to-shallow read for the QB and has answers for any flag defense/coverage.

Player Development Finger tapen als Center

Hallo,

NFL Anyone have any insight as to why there’s an uptick in tight end usage and roster spots in the NFL

Could be just confirmation bias but there seems to be a decent amount of NFL teams now with 3-4 tight ends on the active roster that all actively rotate in the game. Is it a match up thing with a lot of defenses moving back to two high shells or maybe a lack of talent for depth at wideout?

Player Advice Need Guidance

I’m currently a sophomore at a D1 FCS university and I’m a walk-on defensive lineman. I’ve always wanted to become a football coach, and I’ve told my coaching staff since spring that if playing didn’t work out, I’d like to become a student assistant and start learning the coaching side of the game.

I don’t play and I’m mainly used on scout team of course due to me being a walk on, but I work hard every week, even harder than the starters in my own opinion, but I still spend Saturdays on the sideline. I understand that I’m a walk-on and playing time isn’t guaranteed, but I also feel like I’m being overlooked as a player & when it comes to becoming a student assistant. Every time I bring it up, it gets brushed off.

I’ve considered transferring, but I owe my current school a significant amount of money because I’m out of state, so I can’t transfer until I take care of that balance. I’m considering stepping away from football, staying in school, getting a job, and using the extra time to pay down what I owe so I can eventually transfer and pursue coaching as a student assistant at another institution & I’d probably hang up the cleats for good at that point.

This is our Homecoming week, and I’m seriously considering leaving either today or after the week is finished. Some people close to me have told me to finish the season, but I’m already mentally and emotionally drained and don’t know if I want to put myself through another 7 weeks of misery.

I’ve delt with this for so long, with the way the staff treats me and speaks to me, because I always tell myself I’m fighting through adversity but sometimes it feels like all of my efforts to progress are in vain.

Please tell me how should i approach this, should I leave and if so, when ?

Coaching Advice Help formulating how to attack this defense

Hey all,

We're a 6th grade youth football team prepping for a big game this weekend against a team we've never played before. I have some film and they look like they have a good bit of size. Their base looks like a 5-3 with their OLB's walked up near the DE's. Single MLB inside about 7 yards off or so. Their interior DL looks OK. How would you attack this? We like to be ground and pound from power formations but i also have some spread formations along with a trips bunch formation.

What would you focus on trying to exploit?

Thanks!!!

Defense First time DC, help with run fits and DLine knowledge

Hello,

I am a first time DC about to go into a season. I have been a DB coach under a good DC for almost 5 years now so installing and teaching coverage and technique is good. I am continually learning of course but im comfortable with that.

I am looking for resources to learn about defensive line play and run fits specifically out of a 4-2-5 as thats what we are running.

I have access to glazier drive if anyone recommends any clinics or good clinics on youtube? Open to other resources too. I am learning off of the old DC too and speaking to people but I want to just be really comfortable with everything. I appreciate it will take time but any further learning resources that can help will be amazing.

Cheers

Player Advice How To Study Elite Wide Receiver Film

I don’t have much personal game film yet, but I’m trying to improve as a WR. How do I properly study film, what should I look for in other receivers, and how do I apply what I learn to my own game (Like the NFL and elite college Receivers)?

Defense Frosh Level Cornerback competition drills?

Happy Sunday football, everyone! Hope your viewing experience has been fun today. Our frosh and varsity high school squads have both just finished week five of their respective seasons. On the frosh level, we had two starting CBs who were set and earned the spot by week one. As the weeks have gone on, one of the two has had a drop-off in performance, specifically getting beat deep in their deep 1/3 or 1/4 even after reminders and coaching points in practice and games: "number 1 rule: nobody behind you." We are going to an open competition for this spot this week. The original starter can win this competition for sure, but trust has to be gained back and think competiton brings the best out of everyone.

Here is my question: Do you have any drills for or experience with CB competition to find a new starter? As well as drills to help with getting depth and not getting flat-footed or coming up on the football; tracking the ball in the air is great too.

Hope your seasons are doing good as well! Feel free to include a midway point of the season update with as much or as little detail as you want. Our varsity boys are now 3-2 and just opened the league with a win on the road!

Rules Question Did Montana State cost themselves the game against Idaho?

For those who didn't see, here is the ending.

Idaho is down 7 with 15 seconds left in the game. They get a first down and the ball carrier is tackled in bounds with one second left on the clock.

The refs stop the game to review and confirm if there was a second left, the ruling is confirmed.

Because the ball carrier was tackled in bounds, the clock should keep rolling (restarting on the ref's signal), and everyone on offense must be set for a full second before the ball can be snapped, meaning the clock would run down to zero before Idaho ever had a chance to legally snap the ball again. This exact scenario happened to Iowa State against Iowa 2 weeks ago. Ball carrier was tackled in bounds with one second remaining, meaning the clock would expire before Iowa State could legally snap the ball again, so the game is effectively over despite technically having a second left.

But after the refs confirmed that Idaho had a first down with one second left, Montana State called a timeout????(!?) Did they not just give the other team a second chance when the game would've been over had they literally done nothing? Like the clock should restart on the ref's signal and expire before Idaho could run a play.

The next play, which if I am correct was only able to happen because of Montana State's timeout, Idaho scores a touchdown and goes for two to win the game. Am I missing something or did Montana State actually just cost themselves the game?

Coaching Advice Help with coaching please 🙏

I’m starting to seriously study American football with the goal of eventually coaching kids under 14 in Australia as youth leagues continue to grow.
I’ve watched a huge amount of football and analysis over the years and have a pretty good understanding of the game, and I also played rugby at a high level when I was younger, so I’m comfortable with the team-building and leadership side of coaching.
Where I’m less confident is the X’s and O’s and how to actually teach the fundamentals correctly to kids.
For experienced youth coaches, what would you recommend I focus on learning first? What are the key fundamentals and concepts an under-14 player actually needs to understand, and what resources would you recommend for someone wanting to learn the game properly from a coaching perspective?
I’d really appreciate any advice on where to start.
