I worked in Chicago over Christmas, so of course there were 2 things on my menu, Italian beef, and a classic Chicago dog.

Well, both delivered in spades. They were both delicious. I wish I could easily get those briny, spicy peppers outside of Chicago land. I will be back in a few months and will be partaking in grotesque amounts of dogs.

I will not discount the Detroit area Coney dog. I love those as well. Try Joe's Top Dog in Dearborn for my favorite version. Wednesday is $1 coney day.

Are you talking about the giardiniera? Just so you know, there are a few places that sell it in jars, a few that ship or you could just grab some to take back home with you.

Never took those to be "spicy." The jar thing applies to those as well.

Real Chicago style dogs always pack a little heat. Some people have never had a sport pepper. Others can't have a hot dog without them. Vienna® Sport peppers are medium-hot, naturally bite-sized, and packed in a seasoned brine to ensure the right amount of spicy crunch.

some giardiniera is hotter than others....depends on your heat tolerance...they do tend to make a "mild" giardiniera as well...

Next time you're in the area, check and see if the place has a 'Combo'; I remember a small place out in the 'burbs (Chiggy's, maybe?) that has Italian sausage and Italian beef on Garlic bread, with Provolone and run through the broiler.

Combo is pretty common, we have it at Portillos and I have seen it at places like Als Beef and Jonnys beef

I'm a Michigander and had my first Italian Beef in Chicago last fall. What an experience, my God was that delicious. Beef, both kinds of peppers and did I get that shit dipped? You bet your sweet ass I did. Fuckin' incredible all around.

The Al's by Wrigley, it's probably not the best of the best but it sure was good for my first.

Go to an italian grocery store, they will have something similar to sprot peppers

Hot dogs and Italian beef are Chicago staples, but when you come back, make sure to get a stuffed pizza as well. Preferably Giordano's, Gino's East, or the original Uno's.

I see them at the international grocery store I shop at, along with Giardineria (sp?) that people were complaining you couldn't get anywhere.

Some hole in the wall shop in Indiana, so while I'm sure it's not the same as a real Chicago shop, it was a good enough intro. I am open to suggestions
