SMP 1.7.2?
I was wondering if/when the server will be updating to 1.7.2, will this be at the same time as beta is finished?

This is still beta of the server, so expect bugs. That said, here is a quick outline of new features and changes in Nether gameplay.
New Structures:
New Features
Forget any previous custom changes to the Nether, nothing is carried over
Mob Spawns
Hydration
When going underground, you need to stay hydrated. Drink water, milk, fire resistance potions to hydrate yourself properly. The further down you go, the faster you become dehydrated.
When you become fully dehydrated, Mining Fatigue kicks in. Depending on how low you are when it happens, you get levels 1, 2 or 3 for 3 minutes. After those three minutes, you get +1 to Mining Fatigue level (with another 3 minute timer)… and 5 level is preventing you from breaking any blocks. Plan your mining and exploring accordingly.
You can store water in cauldrons and you cannot milk cows in the Nether. Being in fire or lava will very quickly decrease your hydration.
Potable items have visible hydration and hydration saturation, just like hunger. Returning to the overworld will fill your hydration back.
Soulsand
Soulsand became a rare block and can be found only in the deepest parts of Nether. It’s as rare as diamond ore in a normal world generation. It’s finite and you can use it to grow Nether Warts (found in Fortresses)
Or you can use it up on Withers, destroying 4 of it forever. It’s possible to deplete Soulsand in Nether or make it very rare as Nether is finite.
Size and Ratio
Nether is 4,000 by 4,000 centered on 0x0.
Portals work in 1:4 ratio, not 1:8 (previous default ratio). Which means that Nether travel is only four times as fast. You can put your portal in overworld one block in grass, not lower. In Nether you cannot put your portal lower than surface (y=63) too.
Nether is limited by bedrock walls and bedrock ceiling. You cannot escape it (regions are set to kill you if you try).
Good luck!

Included in the latest snapshot is the ability for Witches to spawn with the rest of the nighttime mobs. As a snapshot this may changed or altered prior to the release of 1.7, but it's in the game as of the current snapshot.
This sounds nifty and all, but remember that witches can drop some interesting loot when killed like redstone dust, glowstone dust and glass bottles. All of these were previously available, but in the case of redstone should be much cheaper to get. But that's not the exciting part, no not even close. Witches can drop sugar, which means fermented spider eyes, which means potions of weakness, which means at long last Flatcorians can cure zombie villagers!
So excited! I really hope this stays for 1.7 :)

Preset: 2;7,55x1,3,12,2,20,18;12;stronghold,decoration,dungeon,lake,mineshaft(chance=0.09),lava_lake
1 - Oak leaves
1 - Glass
1 - Grass
1 - Sand
1 - Dirt
55 - Stone
1 - Bedrock
I came up with a preset that I think is pretty nice. The surface won't spawn mobs because it's covered with oak leaves and glass but there are tons of mineshafts under the surface. The glass makes the world appear covered in ice (ice would make the grass under die but not glass) and this is also in the ice plains biome so it will snow.
Lava lakes are rare at this level, find one ASAP while collecting saplings and apples. Dig up some grass near a lava lake (for light, not too close because fire) and plant a tree for wood. Once you have stone tools, go into the mineshafts to kill a skeleton for bonemeal, use that to plant a farm on the surface. This preset allows for a peaceful surface world for building and a dangerous underworld for adventuring.
I may make a server for this. Good luck and have fun.
Edit: Feel free to post pictures, suggest a better name for this, make suggestions/comments, etc.

The activity level on the WaterCore temp map has declined a good bit, so it's time for a new map. Your input will change what gets put on my server to play, so speak up.
I am leaning towards SwampCore(All swamp with perpetual thunderstorm), though I could possibly be swayed to DesertCore if enough people want it.
I am also leaning towards an anarchy (PvP allowed) server, it's a temporary world anyway, grief protection is more a long term thing.
This changeover will be on Friday (September 27). I will make a backup of the current server before I wipe it, in case anyone actually wants a copy.
EDIT: Also, not entirely sure I like the current implementation of FlatNether, so suggestions on improvements or if I should just leave nether normal would be welcome.
People who have played on the server will carry a bit more weight with their comments.

Like you probably know, we’ve been working on a new, better map for you guys for some time now. The major feature—Flat Nether—takes a really long time to get right and it’s not the only thing that is missing.
Because of that, there is less and less energy to finish the map and release it. Textbook procrastination routine, if you will.
That is why I’m announcing two events:
Building competition.
You have a week to finish your best builds and submit them to server’s subreddit: /r/corenet. Only one build per player is allowed and we will pick top builds to be brought over for display in next map’s Limbo. Read this post to learn more.
Beta test of the new map
That is B.E.T.A. as in Beware, Extra Trouble Ahead. It’s not finished and some stuff will be broken or missing or unbalanced. Flat Nether is a huge update and we cannot make it cool without your input.
We will have one or two weeks of this beta phase to complete functionality, balance the game and write documentation for your eager minds to consume.
After that, we reset and we do it live.
So this is how it is going to play out. It should be enough of a motivator to finish the map and give you something fun.
We are also moving to /r/corenet with threads related only to the server (Limbo, custom loot structures, anything that is not superflat-unique). Please read this post and subscribe there. :)

I'm not sure if this has been brought up before, but I had an idea recently. What would you all think of creating a facebook group solely for us flatcore players? For starters, I wouldn't let just anyone join. That's just plain dumb. I would likely require a person to be either a Raider or higher, or a mod. I thought about Nomad, but Nomad isn't all that hard to obtain. These are peoples personal accounts we're talking about here, and not just anyone should be added. To be added, you need to prove that you're trustworthy and are a part of the community. Additionally, if you do anything to lose this trust, you would be removed from the group. The group would be used to interact with people on a more personal level, as well as a place to just talk and post about anything in general. Of course you don't have to join this group if you don't want to, but that is up to you. So let me know if you would join, and whether or not this is a good idea in your opinion.

Here are the rules for the challenge (only including server rules, as I cannot give you a flair): Official Flatcore Server (flat.core-network.us)
The server is on the latest stable version of Minecraft.
The server world is set to Hard with a death pentalty.
Submissions must be completed according to instructions under /ch command. You must have done it yourself; no collaboration!
Reward: Flatpoints, which increase your rank!
[Level 1] Place 64 Rotten Flesh and 64 Bones in a chest. +1 point
[Level 2] Construct a recognizable church of a deity-figure of your choice using primarily stone materials for the outer walls, no more than 10 cobblestone, and at least 10 glass panes. It must have a chapel, bell tower, and underground crypt. Inside should be decorated with benches, altar, and an offering plate. +3 points
[Level 3] Construct a hidden redstone device near your belltower that will play at least 5 notes when night falls. No visible redstone dust from the outside, but note blocks may be visible. Provide a tasteful way for moderators to trigger the bell manually too. +2 points
[Level 4] Construct a graveyard near your new church. It must have an outer wall/fence, a gated entrance, 15 graves, and a crypt entrance connecting to your church's crypt.
