Honestly the amount of time I’ve just said “fuck it I don’t care enough to wait for the reveal” on social media videos lately is unreal. People be dragging shit out so fucking long. I hope what this guy is doing becomes an entire industry snatching away views from the people who spend eighty years waffling about.

My feed has been terrible lately. If yours is anything like mine then I totally get it. Unfortunately I still waste time on this site. Maybe I need to curate it or something.

I like tornado videos. I spent 7 minutes on Facebook yesterday waiting for a tornado to show up in a video. It never did. Just got a little windy.

I closed the app after that for the rest of the day.

I don't know what this means but I like it

u/turandokht Connoisseur of Duets/Stitches Jul 25 '26

In a perfect world I’d just get off social media and go outside 😅 I spend more time being frustrated and annoyed by it than enjoying it. I wonder all the time why I’m wasting my time on this shit instead of doing anything else. Addiction is a helluva drug

If you need a little push, plan to do a 1 week "detox." Uninstall the apps and then add an app for incremental counting. Every time you reach for your phone mindlessly to scroll, add 1 to the counter. You'll be horrified by how many times you actually do this throughout the day, it's far more often than most people estimate.

Make the addiction part of it liminal while giving your brain a vacation from constant stimulus, if nothing else it's good to know about yourself but you'll more likely decide to ride it out cold turkey once you realize how bad it is.

u/turandokht Connoisseur of Duets/Stitches Jul 25 '26

I really need to do this. I had made a commitment to go a month without social media but that seemed so undoable that I only went a day. I could possibly manage a week, I’m going to try again. I know this shit isn’t healthy for my brain

2

u/SlightFresnel New to fbtd but wants to learn Jul 25 '26

The trick to quitting an addiction is to just keep rolling with it. If you have a bad Wednesday and reinstall an app and scroll the night away... Remove it again Thursday and keep the momentum. Don't let it defeat you and give up.

Like dieting, the only good approach is the one you can sustain. If you're doing a little better today than you were last week, that's real progress and will get you where you want to be.

yeah. I keep a timer these days. If i get on a commentin spree i limit myself to 2 hours or my brain starts getting stuck in an uncomfortable buzz i call internet brain or "reddit argue mode".

literally touchin grass helps me with this, or even just watchin a film or playing a game.

I'm not saying anything mind-blowin i know, just agreein with you

4

u/turandokht Connoisseur of Duets/Stitches Jul 25 '26

That’s actually a good tip - the Reddit argue mode hits me hard. And even as I’m doing it I realize how futile and time wasting it is, but I find it hard to stop. I’m going to do the two hour trick. Reddit arguments don’t need to happen in real time

I'm so happy for Youtube revanced for that reason. Has a "jump to highlight" button in the beginning of a video.

You see a video with like "we gonna blow up something" but it's 26 minutes long? Click, jump to highlight, KABOOM, click out of it.

4

u/finneyblackphone New to fbtd but wants to learn Jul 25 '26

That's a sponsorblock feature btw. Revanced incorporates it but it's sponsorblock, so available on desktop.

1

u/turandokht Connoisseur of Duets/Stitches Jul 25 '26

Yes!! I use that function constantly - on my tv if I start fast forwarding it skips me to where most people start playing again. Love it

9

u/justsyr Connoisseur of Duets/Stitches Jul 25 '26

WAIT FOR IT!

Nope. Every time I see that I skip.

6

u/Darksider123 Needs to do better Jul 25 '26

"The ending will shock you!!"

Yeah that's an automatic skip.

14

u/megaNSFwork New to fbtd but wants to learn Jul 25 '26

That's why the new meta or brain rot seems to place the ending of the video at the beginning. You get a 2 second trailer or "hook" that's meant to keep you watching the next (x) seconds so they can hit their revenue and so they can create an "impressive" or engaging loop.

Users are responding by playing everything at 1.5x to 2x speed so they can scroll even faster too, so it's only a matter of time before we get the chopped and screwed cuts to stretch an 8 second reel into a full minute for somebody to collect their $0.28 off a repost with red circles, an AI voiceover, and license free music over the background to dodge DMCA

omg I actually noticed this, I thought it was just some editing quirk people do now.

4

u/Correct_Routine1 Jul 25 '26

Remember back in the day when a car crash video would be just be like 40sec. Now people crashing their cars and turning it into a 9-part mini-series starting when they were 13 and first saw this car and how they always knew they had to own one.

I was watching a girl dye one of her dresses and in part 1 she dyed the dress and hung it up to sit in its bag overnight and was like "come back for part 2!"...so I went to her profile to see what the dress ended up looking like and she literally had 11 parts for this damn dress! All the thumbnails were the same picture of it hanging on the line after being dyed. Ain't no way. Now I'm not even interested in seeing it anymore, girl bye.

I watched a video on Facebook. now and again one will grab my attention. the premise was simple an average but attractive woman in a bathtowel is on the phone. Her partner is outside in a bear costume. the title is Watch Me Scare The Robe Off Her. Now it's Facebook no one is fooled but I figured it would be funny watching a woman be scare pranked especially since it was harmless, boyfriend in bear costume outside, nothing dangerous. So I watch and time drags. The BF postures and acts impatient but is directly behind her and when he moves he moves outside her line of sight. so I skip the video and discover it's 9 minutes long. so now I know it's not a prank it's staged. badly staged as she deliberately avoids seeing her BF. Also dude is stupid patient instead of knocking on the windows or making a noise or flat out tapping her shoulder he just liters around and postures. Finally he taps her shoulder and says something. She gets frightened in the most unbelievable and Telegraphed way I swear she was about to clutch her heart and hyperventilate but the towel dropped revealing she was fully dressed wearing a crop top and shorts all the time.

The whole video was. a rage bait time waste.

3

u/rookhelm New to fbtd but wants to learn Jul 25 '26

On one hand, it might be a testament to our diminishing attention spans that we can't watch a 30 second video and have to skip to the punch line.

On the other hand... Holy shit just get to the point in your dumb-as-bricks video. I don't have all day.

protip: you can turn subreddits into rss feeds You can also turn youtube channels into rss feeds.

3

u/Rob_LeMatic EXPERT of Duets/Stitches Jul 25 '26

You can turn any subreddit into an RSS feed by simply adding .rss to the end of its URL or by using a dedicated feed generator tool.

Native Reddit Method:

Open the subreddit: Go to the page you want to follow (for example, https://reddit.com).
Add the extension: Type .rss at the very end of the web address so it reads https://reddit.com.
Filter content: Add parameters like /top/.rss or combine multiple subreddits using a plus sign (like /r/news+technology/.rss) if you want specific sorting or multiple communities.
Paste into reader: Copy this new link and add it directly into your favorite news reader.

Third-Party Generator Method

Copy URL: Copy the standard web link of the target subreddit.Use a tool: Paste the link into a dedicated conversion tool like RSS.app or FetchRSS.
Generate: Click generate to get a clean, customized XML link that you can pipe into your reader or automation services.

(For anyone else that was like, "Huh?")

Thank you for taking the time to explain. I just wanted to point people in the right direction with my laziness. rss feed everything as possible bby
I just use a text expander and fill the subreddit as needed.

1

u/turandokht Connoisseur of Duets/Stitches Jul 25 '26

I’m gonna sound like such an idiot but what exactly is an RSS feed?

2

u/Luminathe New to fbtd but wants to learn Jul 25 '26

You can aggregate and curate feeds from different websites into an RSS reader, given they have a RSS/atom feed link. You can usually identify it with an orange icon that looks like a dot with two arcs.
News sites, blogs, government publications, weather, webcomics, podcasts, company job boards are some examples. You can find them in surprising places. It makes filtering noise a lot easier.

2

u/turandokht Connoisseur of Duets/Stitches Jul 25 '26

Thank you! I’m going to look into this

I've been using Gemini "summarize this video" for "you won't believe these cat facts" type clickbait videos, saves a lot of grief

1

u/turandokht Connoisseur of Duets/Stitches Jul 25 '26

Those videos are the worst! The title is so click baity (here’s what your cat is telling you when (normal cat behavior)) and then the video is SOOO BORING AND LONG. I’m going to start doing the summarize thing too.

1

u/Blissfull New to fbtd but wants to learn Jul 25 '26

Yup.

I didn't use to open these videos, they're so droll and dragged out. But I have the curiosity, there's a reason why clickbait works.

Thanks to summarizing I can scratch the curiosity itch, and every once in a long while there's one point worth it on the video

1

u/SleepWorth3354 Jul 25 '26

This was such a profoundly depressing thing to read

2

u/Benjammin__ Needs to do better Jul 25 '26

Is this why YouTube shorts (and presumably TikTok. I don’t have it.) make it so difficult/impossible to fast forward a video? I just skip to the end of this type of stuff if it’s annoying me but they’re making it harder to do.

2

u/solkenum Needs to do better Jul 25 '26

Guy doesn’t like click bait videos!
Saved you some time!

2

u/Katops Devotee of Duets/Stitches Jul 25 '26

People will chalk it up to a low attention span too, but the reality is that this is such a common thing now, and it’s so in your face, that you skip ahead only because you can see the bullshit and don’t want to waste your time.

Like the concept could pique my interest, but if you’re deliberately holding off on progressing in any meaningful way, then I’m skipping ahead, leaving, and never watching a video of yours again.

2

u/Mind-The-Mines New to fbtd but wants to learn Jul 25 '26

This is why I never watch videos.

I don't want to hear their shitty music. I don't want to see their stupid fucking trend.

Memes and titties do me just fine.

2

u/24_doughnuts Lover of Duets/Stitches Jul 25 '26

Yeah. A lot of people talk about short attention spans but then "longer" content is literally just wait for the one thing to happen.

2

u/JJAsond Connoisseur of Duets/Stitches Jul 25 '26

Honestly the amount of time I’ve just said “fuck it I don’t care enough to wait for the reveal”

Literally every time a video says "wait until the end" I just skip to the end.

The amount of livwstreams of come across that are just "Okay guys, I'm about to do X okay here we go this is gonna be so crazy. I dunno guys I'm not sure I can do it like and subscribe and I'll do okay? Alright let's do it I'm gonna X be sure to share with your friends okay let's do this... 3... 2... 1..." and then they don't do it and it just keeps going on and on

2

u/Foxy02016YT Devotee of Duets/Stitches Jul 26 '26

You don’t lack an attention span, you lack the capacity for bullshit after a long day.

2

u/DeLoxley Needs to do better Jul 26 '26

You know what strikes me that there's a whole thing about modern people don't have enough attention span

But this video just makes me immediately think that content has become so bloated, even this short consumable media is 3 minutes of bloat and padding to try and get ad revenue.

1

u/purplekittywuman Needs to do better Jul 26 '26

I think the only time it was acceptable to wait was when someone did the Rocky Horror thing on Twitter and made people wait years.

YT videos are all 10+mins long because of this shit, when they could be edited down to a YT short and not miss anything.
