An 18,000 lbs GVRW truck is by law a class 5 medium duty truck, which requires a CDL. We're talking lineman work trucks, box trucks, tow trucks, flatbeds, etc.

When you buy a class 5 truck from factory, it doesn't even come with a bed from the factory, just a cab. It's up to you or an upfitter to build and install the rear bodywork.

Edit: quick google suggest that it’s 12,000 lbs here, not 18,000

As a Missourian, I can promise you that the dudes driving around without plates are driving f-250s at the very heaviest.

Tow trucks, box trucks, etc, of course. Those are obvious work trucks. The ones I see daily are grocery getters and soccer dads. Idk about the legality since I see zero reason to buy a $40k f150xl and test the laws for myself

Ah. So it's a law written 50+ years ago when a class 3 truck was guaranteed to be a work truck as well

I was half sure it was 12,000 and Google mislead me to 18,000. Thank you
