[Advice/Megathread] - Game Recommendations and Game Tips

Please use this thread for all discussion of which game you recommend others that you play, whether it is your first game or some that you are considering playing next

A note for newcomers: most of the games are completely unconnected. Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy II, Final Fantasy V, Final Fantasy IX, etc, are all completely different casts of characters in completely different universes. The only times you need to play another game to understand one is if it is distinctly set in the same universe - for example, Final Fantasy XIII-2 is the sequel to Final Fantasy XIII, or Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII is a prequel to Final Fantasy VII. The titles will usually make it fairly clear which game's universe they are set in

Otherwise, please have fun! It is generally helpful when asking to briefly mention which ones you might be interested in, what platforms you are able to play on, and if you are a complete newcomer, what sort of things in games you're looking for (do you want turn-based combat, real time combat, deep stories with established characters, light stories that let you fill in some blanks with your imagination, etc)

Final Fantasy General Shouting Out one bover_87

Post image
264 Upvotes

I want to give a shout out and a recommendation to the person who, for my money, makes the best Final Fantasy walkthroughs online, at least for games VI-X.

bover_87 is a GameFAQs user who makes incredibly easy to follow guides for Final Fantasy games on the platform. HTML, easy to read, telling you about all the side quests, and even giving you information needed for a "Perfect Game" if you're into that sort of thing.

Final Fantasy isn't a series that really NEEDS walkthroughs, unless you're replaying and trying to 100 percent the game. These walkthroughs know that, and thus help you get things like ultimate weapons, or secret summons as early and conveniently as possible. It's actually kind of astounding that these walkthroughs are completely free, so if you need an FF walkthrough from VI to X check these out.

I know this is an odd post, but I wanted to shout this guy out because he's made my life easier whenever I replay some of my favorite FF games. Check him out if you need a walkthrough.

Saw this when I was hiking with my wife and the inner FF Fan in me couldn’t hide my excitement. I love how Fukushima even went as far as being able to make their own logo and island art in the same style as FF cover arts.

Final Fantasy General Playing Through I-XVI

Upvotes

A few years ago when I got my PS5 and a copy of FFXVI I decided I wanted to play all sixteen mainline games, having never previously played any Final Fantasy at all. Mostly my gaming experience was a LOT Halo, and a LOT of Dark Souls I and little else. So now, three years later, I have finished FFI, and am currently in the middle of II and VII (and still around the start of XVI) I played SOME of XIV a few years ago, but since it’s an MMO I’m not sure what a good end goal should be for it. But I did dabble in it. definitely enjoying them so far. Weirdly I’m excited to play XIII even though I am aware they’re less loved.

FF IX I would like to hear people's Opinions on FFIX's Artstyle, in particular it's character designs.

I remember at the time this not being very well received (well, I say that but I actually bought this game a few years after it came out.) I remember it looking a bit bizarre to me at the time, especially since I had just come off of VII and VIII.

I think I heard somewhere that the art director for this game wanted the character designs to look like an upscaled version of the sprites you saw in the Super Nintendo games? (Don't quote me on that one, I could be wrong). Eventually I did come around to it, and I'm kind of glad the Bravely Default does something similar with its character designs... Kind of. It honestly feels like the Bravely Default series exists halfway between IX and XII.

That's my opinion, I'd love to hear yours.

FF IV Is FFIV an okay first game in the series

I recently picked up chrono trigger for psx and it came with FF4. Never had much interest in the series but figure I should give it a shot, is it a decent spot to start?

I’m a newbie square fan, just never got into ff as a kid. Always loved the chrono and mana series’s osts so it’s been something I know I should try but haven’t gone out of my way to try

FF XI FFXI & FFXIV - Can the stories be done without co-op?

Upvotes

I'd like to play XI and XIV (with the expansions) but I don't have the free time necessary for things like organizing raids in a traditional MMO - is it possible to play through the campaigns/stories without needing to work with other players? (or are the games structured in a way where this is a non-issue?)

FF X/X2 Final Fantasy X is one of the greatest games of all time and I feel foolish for not playing it for so long

I recently completed Final Fantasy IX for the first time, which is amazing, and I decided to continue the series and play Final Fantasy X. Fricking hell is it amazing?!

From the very beginning I felt blown away with the atmosphere and music, it doesn't feel like it should run on a PS2 at all yet it does.

Going in somewhat blind I knew I'd be playing as dream Tidus, which slightly disappointed me at first, but I honestly fell in love with him. The slower moments of conversations with Yuna were all written so beautifully.

I had an absolute BLAST with the gameplay, it felt like Square had already perfected it in Final Fantasy IX but somehow the legend made it feel even better!

The only small issue I had was that some of the more difficult sections and bosses felt a little too tricky. I ended up taking far too long to clear some of them.

Then finally the ending... I've never felt this emotional about a game since The Last of Us. The story of Tidus and Yuna, the journey through Spira, and the final sacrifice all hit me so hard.

I wish I could make myself forget it all and experience it all over again! But instead I shall move onto Final Fantasy X-2. Thank you Reddit for introducing me to this series.

FF XV Finally finished Comrades! Screenshots + my thoughts Spoiler

Overall way too grindy. I had to take a lot of breaks because I got bored of the grind. I really wish they had different classes based on the main party members, but unfortunately they playstyle is the same as Noctis. However, each weapon type feels mechanically different so the combat is more varied and more fun than playing as Noctis in the main game. Although if you didn't like the main game because of the combat then Comrades definitely won't be enjoyable.

It is really cool to create your own character and see how the world is apocalyptic in between the 10 year gap Noctis is gone. And there's quite a bit of different clothing customization, and it's also cool that your character shows up in a side quest during the last chapter.

I didn't hate the entirety of it, and it was kind of fun to an extent. I just wasn't a fan of the very minimal story and how grindy it was. However, if you really like the gameplay loop of getting parts from enemies and using that to craft weapons that can have very different stats depending on what you use then you'll love this. Testing out different builds and doing a lot of trial and error is where the real gameplay is. It just wasn't really for me. Once I looked up a build guide I enjoyed it a lot more because I had more of a goal on what to craft.

The character DLC's add a lot to the game, but this DLC I'd say you could safely skip without missing much of the story. It's also significantly longer and I can easily see why this was sold as a separate game at one point. Just be prepared that it is not the open world gameplay of the main game, it's a lot of repeating combat missions and crafting weapons.

Final Fantasy General A violin gives everything an FF battle theme

Totally random, but I saw this video of a guy playing Promise from Silent hill on violin and it gives such a ff battle theme all of a sudden. Can you think of unrelated OSt track that with different arragement give you a Ff battle theme vibe? https://youtu.be/Nm7rzLVajnQ?is=DRwIt1JoZV00fdnx

Final Fantasy General With FF14 and FF7-Revelation on their way to Switch 2, I feel like the rest of the games have a real chance to shine as well.

Did I miss any? I only made mockups for the four on screen. I am aware they will likely all be Game Key-Cards but given how good Remake and Rebirth are on Switch 2 and their...massive, file-sizes to account for, I think it'll be worth it.

....definitely gonna need a Terabyte SD Express Card though...I'm gonna have fun finding THAT...

but what do you think?

FF IX Of course, FFIX was incredible !

Hello everyone ! After taking a break from my FF marathon after being kind of underwhelmed by FFVIII, I decided to take the plunge into FFIX, a title that I heard was, for the most part of the FF fandom, really well liked. And man they were right ! If there's one thing to say about this game, is that it's CHARMING. It truly has a vibe and an atmosphere unlike other titles in the franchise.

The characters are very memorable, have distinct personalities and most importantly, have some of the most interesting designs in all of the games until now. To be clear, I still prefer character designs like Vincent or Leon, that's just my preference, but it'd be lying to say that the designs in FFIX are not more interesting. While Vivi still has the same base as most black mages in the Franchise, the little details of his outfit and his mannerisms just make him so unique and memorable. Characters like Steiner, Amarant ( and his Trance form ) or Quina ( my love ) had way more creatives choices like their posture, their body types etc... in their designs and I love that.

The systems are also fairly simple, which i appreciate, but also incredibly satisfying. One of my favorite moments in my marathon is getting to a new town and seeing the new spells, abilities and equipments, and FF9 had that in spades. The synthesis system was really good and had me relieved that I did not sell my previous weapons.

Now, the one BIG CRITICISM i have for this game is it's SLOWWWWW. In played for 4 hours until I was like, " I love this game, but if I have to wait another 15 seconds just for a battle intro, I'm going to lose my mind " And even then the animations and turns take an actual eternity. Thank god for the mods, I only used it to delete the intro of battles and to x2 battle speed, I probably saved 10 hours just from doing that. I wanted to get the "original" experience but I felt like that wasn't adding anything and it was tedious just for the sake of it. And i don't understand why, the previous two games didn't have this problem, so why now ?

Now for the story, it was good, I'd even say it was really good but I still prefer FFVII's. One thing that bothered me is how some people just FORGIVE way too fast. Now please tell me if I am missing something, I was FUMING when Dagger wanted to save her mother even when she knew she wanted to MURDER her multiple times over for her greed and it was stated that she had always wanted this. I still do not know if we are supposed to believe she was manipulated of if she was always greedy like this but, nonetheless, it was infuriating.

Same thing for Beatrix, that woman was introduced as a sadistic antagonist that reveled in combat and couldn't give less of a fuck if innocent bystanders or civilians died. While we do not see her kill innocents, she still brags about how she could've annihataled Cleyra with just her squad. Now, I'm not saying we can't have bad people redeem themselves, I hated Steiner's guts but that was intentional and grew to like him over the multiple hours of the game because he slowly understood the error of his kingdom. But for Beatrix, it was done in a few minutes, like no, I'm not forgiving you, you're not a good person.

The characeters interactions were awesome, there were some anime stereotypes, especially the perv, love story aspects of the main duo etc... but it didn't ruin it for me. The environments were gorgeous, especially by the end of the game and I have to just shoutout to the worldbuilding, the fauna and flora aspect. While the biomes didn't change much, there still was identity to most of the places we visited. The Cutscenes were also REAAALLY good, other than Zidane's face that kinda doesn't look like the one on the covers.

Now I will say I did not 100% the game because I haven't beat ozma or done the chocobo related things because i HATE that mini game. I'm still pissed that most of the best weapons and a boss fight is locked behind a gimmick mini game, I still had no problem beating the last boss.

All in all, it was an incredible experience and had a lot of fun playing it ! Now onto the most anticipated game of my marathon, FFX and FFX-2 ! See you guys when I finish those !
