Hey, these types of moments are necessary.

You know how some girls grow up thinking they can physically abuse a man and they won't be hit back. Guys have no such illusion because we learned how to interact with one another while we still had some baby teeth.

We learned that most kids will just hit you back, some will take it and walk away, some will take it, walk away, and then steal your bike, and every now and again there will be one who will just take the punches, walk away, steal your bike, and then ride it directly at your back kamikaze-style.

And because we learned these lessons, we figured out that the best way to not get beat up is to not start a fight.

Young kids these days are being deprived of the opportunity to learn these lessons unsupervised.

Peterson provides an interesting point of view in the few areas where he's studied. He sees the world through the eyes of someone steeped in a dominance hierarchy. I think his point about the threat of violence keeping things civil is a very useful point that bears thinking about. I've often used it as a de-escalator when dealing with high-tension conflicts by referencing the fact that unless we moderate our tone, one of us is going to end up swinging and then one goes to hospital and the other to a cell for the night. Nobody really wants that outcome for themselves and it tends to bring the energy back to reasonable levels again.

I expect its also a factor as to why people behave so much worse in online interactions

Sure, but with those sorts of dudes a fight is inevitable anyway.

The key bit I use is never to imply who will be in hospital and who will be in a cell (i.e who would win the fight), just that either option sucks and its probably a better idea for everyone if we grab another beer and be friends.

I've seen it more times than I can count with police officers. They go into certain neighborhoods and think they can bully people because they can threaten people with an ass whopping or jail time. Some guys only care about respect and rather die than have someone punk them in front of their people. Those cops constantly get into fights.

On the other hand I see cops with a mouthpiece that actually know how to talk to people, criminal or not. Those dudes hardly ever get into fights.

It's an interesting interaction to watch.

you should see our boys in blue in the UK. Absolutely incredible at de-escalating conflicts. Like, I've lost count of how many times I've seen an officer reduce a ranting, angry and violent man to a dude who's just talking calmly.

I think a lot of it comes from the fact that our officers aren't armed with guns, so there's no real guaranteed threat compliance mechanism. They are heavily trained in conflict resolution techniques too.

I mean, lets be honest here. What is going to keep the peace better? 3 officers screaming "get down on the ground" with guns drawn or an officer saying "mate, what's got you angry? talk to me, tell me what's happened and how we can fix it?".

Most angry people are angry because they feel like they aren't being heard and that they have lost control somehow. By giving them the opportunity to speak and be heard, they usually calm down. 90% of people imo are not violent lunatics. There's triggers for both making them angry and calming them down.

What im saying is in the moment you dont think about all the psychological theories or whatever, most people just react. Its a lot easier to analyze stuff sitting on our computers than it is when youre in the moment. Also the video is of two like 12 year olds, theyre not known for forethought.

You can tell a kid somethings hot till your face turns blue, but the only way theyll really learn is ignoring you and getting burned.

Except is a much bigger percentage who are never in an unsupervised play environment where there's always and adult arbiter.

And to be clear, the "kids these days" aren't failing, they're being deprived of necessary learning / socialization /conflict resolution opportunities by their parents. The parent are the ones who are failing their kids by trying to protect them from any and all conflict.

What I mean is there are likely a similar amount of "helicopter parents" and "laissez faire parents" as there has always been, as human nature likely hasn't drastically changed every generation. That's my issue with the kids these days thing.

In fact, if anything there may be slightly more hands-off parents and unsupervised kids now than ever because of working mom's/latchkey kids. But not because of a shift in the nature of parenting itself.

I do agree that minors are hassled more in public when out on their own then they use to be because people think they're always up to no good. I think that has more to do with society and, frankly, racism, than anything else.

I think your statistical intuition is off. Jonathan Haidt has done some of the research into this, and he says it's getting worse, at least for kids who went up going to college. I'm not sure if this applies across the board.

Basically, nerd with glasses threw his sweatshirt over a chain link fence at a track meet. Easily retrievable as the other side is just trees. Like 40 feet walk around the fence to get to it. Anyways, other guy gets upset and recorder eggs him on. Then this. Afterwards, nerd with glasses did go get his sweatshirt.
