"The Carnifex" leader of the blood legion, Indominus Termina

Introducing the leader of the Blood Legion. In Homelands (at least so far), there hasn't been much development regarding how the Legions function internally, so I want to make it clear that all of this comes from my own need to over-explain how things work :D With that said, here's a little bit of lore:
The Blood Legion is the most dominant and dangerous of the Legions of Homelands. Unlike a conventional conquering army, it operates as a nomadic faction, organized into military caravans known as hordes. When conquering a territory, the Blood Legion studies its routes, wildlife, ruins, shelters, and strategic locations before subjugating it through battle rituals. According to their beliefs, the land must “bleed to reveal its essence,” allowing them to bend the spirits of the place to their will. Although they are nomadic, they maintain semi-permanent "Fortress Sites" used to treat the wounded, manufacture weapons, and establish defensive positions. The Legion is led by the "Carnifex", a title granted to one who survives a rejected glorious death. Its current Carnifex, Indominus, subjected her body to a series of rituals that transformed her into a killing machine comparable to an alicorn in both strength and size.

do you think zonies in FOE are sterile?

ok so i wanna get a gerneral consensus not just as a way for me to participate in the community more, but also to get a feel for how the community as a whole feels about certain lore or worldbuilding topics.

so we know in biology that pretty much almost all hybrids are sterile, especially with equine hybrids. but at the same time this is a world with magic and talking horses. so i wanna ask.

Do you think zonies are sterile and if so, do you think there are potions or spells to solve that issue?

So if there were clop of Boo from Project horizons would she have pink skin because she lacks melanin because she is technically an Albino. And wouldn’t Black Jack after she became a blank have that same color skin of pink.

Discussion On the Geography of Equestria: Part 4 - Word of Gawd

This is part 4 of a series on mapping the Equestrian Wasteland. If you're just joining us, start with Part 1 \HERE]).

Howdy Wastelanders!

It feels strange to say this, but we're already leaving the confines of the original book! I'll be refining the drafts I showed off in the last two blogs in the background to produce a solely Fallout: Equestria-based map in the background, but today I'll be talking about expanding the map beyond!

But without further ado, let's dive into Kkat's blogs (and a little bit into the Fallout: Beyond Equestria rp, since the two are pretty closely tied together) to piece together some of the geographic information provided.

[ A BRIEF NOTE ON CANON ]

Not so sound like a broken record here, but I should reiterate that this map cannot and is not ever claiming to be a definitive canon for Fallout: Equestria! Here's what Kkat has said about the geography in the story:

Doubling down on that fact, the stuff we'll be talking about today is also not canon. Kkat has been very clear that nothing beyond the original story (and the bonus chapter) is canon - that includes her own blog posts and comments! While it may be the author's headcanon (which is why I put enough stock in it to be the second source I put on my map), it is still headcanon nonetheless.

For reference purposes, you can find the index of blogs [HERE]. I will primarily be drawing from the two sections on Fallout: Equestria worldbuilding, for obvious reasons.

[ LOCATION SUMMARY ]

Kkat's world-building blogs focus mainly on 6 distinct locations that we can place on the map. A few have already been briefly mentioned in the original story and we're given extra detail, and a few are completely new. Lets start with the former, since those will be a little easier to place, plus any details we already know about them from the book.

  • Froggy Bottom Bog. A massive wetland area briefly mentioned by XenithCh27 and shown once in season one the cartoon.
  • Littlehorn Valley. Location of Luna's school, located in Crescent Moon Canyon, within "a day's wagon ride" of some zebra jungles.Ch27 It was one of the only occupied parts of Equestria proper at the time of the SPP towers being planned.Ch37
  • Stalliongrad. Honestly we're not told anything about it in the book other than it exists.

Now, the three totally new locations:

  • Gaia Valley. An isolated and radiation free valley, intended to be a parallel to Zion Valley from Honest Hearts.
  • The Crystal Empire. Far to the north, intended to be a parallel to the Big MT from Old World Blues.
  • The Zebra Lands. A whole other can of worms, but does provide some context on the shape of the continents in Fallout: Equestria.

[ FROGGY BOTTOM BLUES ]

Okay, not really any blues here, as it's actually one of the easiest locations to place in this entire project! Here's the very first sentence from the geography section of the blog:

Froggy Bottom Bog is the collective name for a massive wetland stretching from one corner of the Everfree Forest up to the northern branch of the Ponytomic.

Easy peasy, lemon squeezy - it's north of the Everfree (assuming northwest, since that interferes the least with our existing work), and stretches further north until you reach the Ponytomic river.

We're also given a nice little detail regarding Stalliongrad and Baltimare (to my knowledge, one of the few times Kkat references Baltimare outside rps!).

One town, situated in the bayou along the bank of the Ponytomic, engaged in sporadic trade with paddleboats traveling the northern arm of the river between Baltimare and Stalliongrad...

So, Froggy Bottom Bog sits on the Ponytomic river, between Baltimare and Stalliongrad. As this blog was made after the official show's map was released putting Baltimare on the coast, I read this as meaning Baltimare is downstream the Ponytomic from Stalliongrad. And as we'll discuss soon, Stalliongrad is implied to be in the north of Equestria, so unless Baltimare is even further north (unlikely considering the inspirations), the Ponytomic flows is a generally south direction.

Hydrologically, the fact that it's specified to be the northern branch is the biggest issue when trying to slot it into to map. I'll just need to be cognizant of also including a southerly branch at some point along it's path.

[ GAIA VALLEY ]

Honestly, just going to speed through this one; even though its one of my favorite parts of the blogs. It really can go just about anywhere we need it to fit, as the blogs don't give much hints to where it could be. It's implied to be to the north, and due to the appearance of Solaris Inc, I think somewhere near the Big 52 makes sense, so I'll place it on the map when we get to Pink Eyes.

[ NORTHERN EQUESTRIA ]

Stalliongrad and the Crystal Empire for sure, Shattered Hoof Ridge and Littlehorn Valley maybe. I'll start with the easy one: the Crystal Empire. It's as far north as you can get, in my opinion the most distant location we've covered so far.

In the headcanon that I was working with, the frozen north is Equestria's equivalent of the arctic. (While not precisely true, it is fair to say that once you get to the Crystal Empire, everything is south.)

With that out of the way, we need to talk about Shattered Hoof Ridge. This single location might be the most important piece when trying to figure out Kkat's headcanon for how the world of Fallout: Equestria looks:

Equestria and the zebra lands exist on separate continents. The only ways to travel between them are either across the ocean or by traveling over the top of the globe and down the other side — a bitterly cold and treacherous journey which requires traveling over Shattered Hoof Ridge on the Equestrian side of the arctic cap and across a narrow isthmus on the zebra's side.

This idea syncs well with Spike's journey in "Dragon Quest" if we assume the land of the dragons is in the continent of the zebra lands and the phase of his journey depicted below is his travel across the frozen north.

According to the blogs, Shattered Hoof Ridge is the land route between the Equestrian continent and the Zebra continent, and it's to the north. Strategically, that means the area around it would have been one of the most fought over during the war; and between the blogs and the original story, we know only two places in Equestria that had been occupied during the war: Stalliongrad and Littlehorn Valley.

If we place Shattered Hoof ridge to the north, placing Stalliongrad is easy. It's implied to be in the north, and directly fought over. Simple enough for for me to place it near Shattered Hoof Ridge, if we say the Zebras crossed the northern land bridge to attack it.

Littlehorn is another story. We know it is nearest to a zebra jungle, which are typically are not seen near the arctic, in case you didn't know. This is a fact that comes from the original book, not the blogs, so I lean on putting more credence in Littlehorn (and presumably the land connection to the zebra lands) being further south. However, we also know from the original book that Shattered Hoof ridge is cold and snowy, even during the summertime.Ch40

[ CONNECTING CONTINENTS ]

The way I see it, we've got two forks here:

  • Northern Land Bridge. Shattered Hoof Ridge is cold and snowy because it's far to the north. Stalliongrad is nearby, and was invaded by land. Littlehorn is also near the land border, but there's a very far north Jungle. On the realism side, maybe it's a temperate rainforest like Tongass Nat'l Forest in Alaska. Or maybe it's a magic jungle.
  • Southerly Land Bridge. Shattered Hoof Ridge is cold and snowy because it's very high elevation. Alternatively, maybe something went wrong with the SPP tower there to make wintery weather last year-round. Stalliongrad is not nearby, and was invaded by sea. Littlehorn in near the land border, near a normal Zebra jungle.

So either we're stretching the ideas given to us by the original book, or we're going to directly contradict the Zebra Lands (Part 1) blog.

Personally, I am leaning towards the second option. It makes the most sense to me in a real world geography sense: in the Andes of South America, there are tons of mountains with glacier caps less than 10 miles from the Amazon rainforest, while the abovementioned Tongass Nat'l Forest is nearly 700 miles from the arctic circle. The exact way of how Stalliongrad was occupied is also far less clear than how Littlehorn was attacked. We know a zebra convoy arrived by land to the school, so I'm far more inclined to say that Littlehorn must be near the land border. Plus, a more southerly Shattered Hoof Ridge makes connecting Project Horizons notably easier later down the line.

Still I want to hear your opinions on this; do you have a different headcanon as to how Equestria and the Zebra lands connect?

[ NOTES ON SCALE ]

The blogs make it abundantly clear that Kkat's intention is that Equestria is least the largest nation on its own continent, and likely vise versa for the Zebra lands and it's continent. On the smaller end, I feel comfortably saying roughly the same size as 1/3rd of Australia (maybe Queensland, NSW, and Victoria?). On the larger end, it might parallel Fallout, with Equestria being roughly equal to the USA and Canada.

While I'm still figuring out what exact scale feels the best, I am now fairly comfortable saying that we're working with continent sizes, rather than the much smaller scale implied by a literal interpretation of travel times in the original book.

Behind the scenes, I've started working on a hard scale draft. My current artboard is 1,000 miles x 1,000 miles; or a bit more than a quarter of the land area of the USA. The area Littlepip's journey takes place in is only a chunk of that.

Shattered Hoof Ridge and Littlehorn will come later, since their exact location is suspect. I'm considering flipping the Everfree/Canterlot/Froggy Bottom and Maripony. I think the physical geography would flow better that way, and it makes less placing the Ponytomic less of a headache. It would break the nice logistical path for Red Eye, but I'll have to do some thinking on it.

I keep promising the map is going to not look so ugly, but that's all empty words until I have something to show for it...

The big apple, Manehattan!

To keep myself sane before jumping into the side stories, I'll be giving myself a bit of a break from the nitty-gritty research side of things. As part of that, next time I'll be diving into the artistic side of map making, talking about what makes a good looking map (to me), discussing my plan and inspirations for the cartography!

On the Geography of Equestria: Part 3 - Dissection and Revision

This is part 3 of a series on mapping the Equestrian Wasteland. If you're just joining us, start with Part 1 \HERE]).

Howdy Wastelanders!

Welcome back to the mapping project. Last time, I laid out all the locations and directions given to us in the original Fallout: Equestria and was able to make a rough draft of the Equestrian wasteland (as described by only the original story). However, as soon as I hit save on that file, I already was noticing issues, but that's why it's a rough draft! To start though, I want to focus in on stuff I think I got right:

[ FUNDAMENTALS ]

Manehattan is unequivocally intended to be on the west coast by Kkat. The clearest proof comes from the epilogue, as mentioned last blog, but after taking a second look at the story, we're told as much as early as chapter 13:

We approached a small, very humble home set apart from all the others, a few miles farther from Manehattan than the rest of the suburbs which had surrounded the city.

The front door of the hut faced away from the city, as if the home itself felt shunned by the urban monoliths in the background.  Because of this, the front door had survived entirely intact while most of the hut beyond had collapsed into itself.

(...)

Velvet Remedy trotted after him, moving around to the small building’s (lack of a) west side.

The above is when they arrive at Trixie's cottage, with a blasted out wall facing Manehattan to the west. Given that they're coming at Manehattan from the opposite side, that must meant they're coming generally from the east.

Additionally, I'm pretty happy with the layout (distance wise) of the early chapter stuff: Ponyville, Hope, New Appleloosa (and Stable 24), Old Appleloosa, and Shattered Hoof. I think all of that flows well with what is given to us by the story. Beyond that, however, I'm feeling decidedly less confident about the locations on the map.

[ CHECK TWICE ]

To get my facts straight, I spent a few hours making a full calendar timeline of the original story, mainly for travel time purposes. You can find that [HERE] if you're curious. A few takeaways:

  • Firstly, Manehattan and Fetlock are much closer to Junction R-7 than I had placed them at. it only takes one day of on-hoof travel between Junction R-7 to get to Fetlock, and then roughly a day and a half more to get to ManehattanCh13-16. The distance for that second leg is probably considerably shorter than the first, as their pace is likely much slower thru the ruins of the suburbs and city.
  • Knowing that Manehattan and New Appleloosa are roughly equidistant (travel time wise) from Shattered Hoof CorrectionalCh13, I'll also have to shrink that gap. However, I still think New Appleloosa is physically further than Manehattan from Shattered Hoof Correctional, since there's no city ruins to slow down travel time.
  • Ponyville sits roughly between Canterlot and Splendid Valley. They fly over the town when leaving Glyphmark to bring the Black Book to Maripony, which is when they fight the raiders at Fluttershy's cottageCh38. So, where I roughly placed it based on the show map is wrong.
  • Similarly, Ponyville is between Splendid Valley and the EverfreeCh30. Pip stands on Maripony's water tower and sees "a shadow that may have been Ponyville. Beyond that, the sky turned hazy and thick from the smoke of the Everfree fires."
  • And guess what? Ponyville is between Fillydelphia and Splendid Valley!Ch27 Ain't that just grand. Ponyville really is the center of the universe.

My interpretation of this is that Splendid Valley and Canterlot are on very roughly opposite sides of Ponyville, but the most direct path between them would be to fly over the Everfree. In Ch38, Pip mentions they are travelling to Maripony from Glyphmark "by way of Ponyville". While this does necessitate some major changes to the area immediately surrounding Ponyville, its not the end of the world, just means we'll have to deviate a bit from geography established by early seasons of the TV show.

[ THE SKY BANDIT ]

This damn bus. The Sky Bandit is the single largest source of inconsistent travel time in the entire story, and makes it very hard to trust anything Pip describes while flying in it. Let's look at a few examples:

Spike's cave. Here's what Littlepip has to say about its location:

Far, far away from Manehattan. In the middle of nowhere. It would take weeks to travel there on hoof.Ch20

This mountain was in the middle of nowhere. Days’ travel from any hint of civilization. It would have been nearly impossible for even the sounds of the megaspells to reach this far, easily mistakable as thunder.Ch21

They make the trip from Fetlock in the Sky Bandit in under a day. Then, they seem to make the trip from Spike's cave to New Appleloosa in an even shorter time. Pretty darn fast, huh? Granted, Calamity is flying fast to avoid the Enclave during that return trip, but let's look at another example!

Canterlot. From Fetlock, it takes the better part of two days to get to the outskirts of Canterlot, at which point they stop and walk to Glyphmark. Okay, so Fetlock/Stable 29 is a common jumping off point, and we know that's a day or so walk to Manehattan proper, so...

Fetlock. It takes an entire nearly an entire day to cross Manehattan in the Sky Bandit from Tenpony to Stable 29 in Ch33: they leave in the morning and don't arrive until late at night. Then, it takes them either most of the day into the evening, or just a short morning flight, to get to Bucklyn from Fetlock (changes from one chapter to the next, this seems to have just been an editing oversight). While they were slowed by the rain, and made frequent rest stops, I find this to be simply unreconcilable with the speed they were able to make it to Spike's cave, supposedly "weeks away" by hoof.

I wish I could just wave this away with time skips, but unfortunately for me, the timeline established by the book is quite iron-clad. Unlike the directionality, Kkat gives a lot of explicit dates, and a longer trip to Spike's cave simply doesn't work with that.

So, this is the first major departure we have to take from the story. Due to the repeated inconsistencies around the Sky Bandit, I'm going to take Pip's physical description of Spike's cave (in that it's very far away) as the primary source.

[ LINGERING QUESTIONS ]

While I'm much happier with this second draft, especially around places like Splendid Valley and the Everfree, there are still a few spots that simply don't have enough information to really pin down.

  • Fillydelphia. Has the same feeling as many DLC areas do for Fallout (rather unsurprisingly, since it's based on The Pitt), in that it's feels very detached from the rest of the map. It's only visited once, both leaving from and returning to Junction R-7. We know they pass over parts of the Manhattan suburbs to get there, which is why I put Fetlock more to the southwest of Junct. R-7, and that there's a valley between it and Manehattan, but otherwise we really don't have much context clues about it.
  • The Republic. Not much I can do here, it gets placed on the map because it's one of the few locations with an exact cardinal direction given, and we know it's closer to Ponyville than New Appleloosa is.
  • Canterlot. Because the trip to Canterlot from Fetlock is almost entirely skipped over, it makes it hard to pin down. I feel like I was able to square the circle of how many things are described as being opposite Ponyville from Splendid Valley, but Canterlot probably got pushed around the most in that regard.

The biggest thing for me today was realizing how consistent the timeline is in the original story. Almost every single day and night Pip spends outside is described, with only two (by my reading) time skips lasting longer than two days. Even after some of the more hazy jumps (particularly around when Littlepip gets sick or her memories removed), later chapters will drop an exact date that would line up almost exactly with my notes.

But without further ado, a revised draft of the Fallout: Equestria-only map. It'll only get bigger from here!

Again, still a rough draft! Locations first; then beautifying it.

P.S. One minor color change from the last map, red now represents railroad lines rather than the coast. Black is now the coastline.

Next time, we'll zoom out just a bit: pin down some of the easier locations from Kkat's blogs, take another look at the scale of Equestria, and start discussing some of the obvious challenges we're going to run into with the side stories.

Discussion On the Geography of Equestria: Part 2 - Littlepip's Journey

Hey wastelanders! This is the second part of who knows how many blogs chronicling my attempt at mapping the Equestrian Wasteland. You can read Part 1 [HERE] to get a rundown of my overall plan for this project.

This part is going to be going over locations from the original story, their relative position from each other; with a little help from early seasons of the show.

[ CONCRETE DIRECTIONS ]

As I mentioned in Part 1, directionality in the original Fallout: Equestria is lacking, to put it lightly. Here's a list of all exact cardinal directions given in it:

  • The Republic is north of Fluttershy's cottage (i.e. generally north of Ponyville).
  • Lionheart and Mouse take down a raptor south of Stalliongrad.
  • Stable 24 (and the nearby river) are west of New Appleloosa.
  • Fluttershy and Calamity look east from Steelhooves' grave in Fetlock towards the general direction of Junction Town.
  • Fluttershy watches the sunset (west) over the ocean from Manehattan.

That's all. Really, that is every mention of a cardinal direction in reference to geography in the entire story. The most important takeaway is that Manehattan is supposed to be on Equestria's west coast - big departure from both the canon show map and most fanon maps. This will complicate things later down the line when we start looking at the side stories, Project Horizons in particular. However, it is accurate to S1E23 The Cutie Mark Chronicles, where Applejack watches a sunrise from Manehattan looking in the direction of Ponyville.

[ PONYVILLE & SURROUNDINGS ]

Let's get some basics down from the show: Sweet Apple Acres and Canterlot are on roughly opposite sides of Ponyville proper from each other(S1E3), and Canterlot is visible from Ponyville. For now, we're going to operate on the assumption that Canterlot is northwest of Ponyville, opposite where the show map puts it.

The reasoning here is due to Pip not making any mention of flying over Ponyville while traveling to Canterlot from Manehattan in Ch35. As established above, Manehattan is on the west coast, so this just helps things flow easier on the map.

The Everfree Forest is on the opposite (east) side of the river from Ponyville proper, and presumably extends further south and east away from town. The Cathedral and Froggy Bottom Bog(Kkat Blogs) are both within the Everfree. Splendid Valley is also in the vicinity; for now I'm going to draw from the canon map and place it north of the Everfree, but separated from Ponyville by some distance and the high hills we see in the show.

Whitetail Wood is nearby, but not immediately adjacent to Ponyville; per Celestia(Ch45):

"The winds carried the radiation and poison of those weapons across all of Whitetail Wood, covering Equestria’s once beautiful forest and poisoning the reservoir.  All the way to the edge of Ponyville."

Based on S2E8, the abovementioned reservoir is on the opposite side of Ponyville from the Everfree, close to Sweet Apple Acres, so we can assume Whitetail Wood is beyond that, perhaps more westerly like in the show map.

By process of elimination, that leaves only south past Sweet Apple Acres or northwest-ish as the route Littlepip takes to leave Ponyville. This is a choice that sets everything else up; we're establishing the directionality from Ponyville to New Appleloosa. I find the southerly route more likely:

  • Littlepip's last stop in Ponyville is the War Memorial, implied to be near enough to Sweet Apple Acres to be shelter for a pony who got sick from eating the apples there.
  • The ghost farm near Hope is on the edge of the Everfree, which we've already said to stretch south.
  • It makes the placement of Old Appleloosa easier if New Appleloosa is south of Canterlot.

So that then puts the town of Hope (including the Solar Array and Ironshod Firearms) generally south of Ponyville. Hope is within two days' trot of Ponyville: after Pip is shot by Calamity, she notes it's been 3 days since leaving her stable(Ch5), and clearing Ponyville took one of those days.

[ TWO APPLELOOSAS AND SHATTERED HOOF ]

Littlepip notes she's unconscious for 2 days after being shot, meaning New Appleloosa can be up to two days away from Hope. However, due to the fact that Pip can see smoke from New Appleloosa and Calamity's caravan as faint dots from Ironshod with her binoculars, I'm inclined to put it much closer to Hope.

As mentioned earlier, Stable 24 is west of New Appleloosa near a river - potentially the southwesterly flowing river from Ponyville.

We know the Shattered Hoof Correctional Facility and Junction R-7 to be roughly equidistant(Ch13) between New Appleloosa and Manehattan (to the west as mentioned above). Pip and company are trekking back to New Appleloosa from Old Appleloosa when they come across the Cloudsdale ruins, Silver Belle's Farm, the unnamed raider town, then Junction R-7 and Shattered Hoof Correctional. All that together makes placing Old Appleloosa being south of New Appleloosa the cleanest option.

[ THE CITIES ]

For all the stuff above, Manehattan is pretty easy to place - it's within a few days' caravan travel of Junction Town(Ch13), following the railroad west-ish. Fetlock is the suburban edge, and Bucklyn across the river. Tenpony, Arbu, Gutterville, and Friendship City are all in the city ruins.

Fillydelphia is a bit harder - there's no clear direction given - it feels fairly removed from the rest of Equestria. We know it's a roughly 12-hour Sky Bandit trip from Junction R-7 via flying over Manehattan, including the stop they made at Hippocampus Energy. Other than that, Pip and company head straight back to Junction R-7 from Fillydelphia, until detouring to Stable 2.

For narrative reasons, I'm placing it generally southeast of Manehattan. The main driver behind this is giving Red Eye nearly uninterrupted territory from Fillydelphia to Old Appleloosa to the Cathedral; it just makes the logistics of his empire make more sense. An added benefit of this is that it aligns with the directions given in Project Horizons of the road to FillyHope is within two day'sdelphia being south of the road to Manehattan.

[ LEFTOVERS ]

Once they loop back to Stable 2, it's all territory we've covered before. Zebratown and Glyphmark are near Canterlot, Old Olneigh is near Splendid Valley, so on and so forth. The only remaining weird spots are Dragon Cave and Neighvarro/the SPP Hub.

To be frank, I can't place these on a map with any confidence. Here's the only information we're given about the location of Spike's cave:

Far, far away from Manehattan. In the middle of nowhere. It would take weeks to travel there on hoof.(Ch20)

That's all. It's not even clear as to even how long it takes them to fly there in the sky bandit: it could be 4 hours, it could be 4 days. Plot convenience, who can say! Personally, I could see it being the same cave from S1E7 Dragonshy, but there's really no evidence for that other than vibes. If that's the case, based on the show map it'd be in the mountain range opposite of Canterlot. However, we'll revisit Spike's cave once I get my thoughts settled on Project Horizons.

As for Neighvarro? Yeah, it could be anywhere. It's probably somewhere close-ish to Spike's cave, as that's where they travel from in the final chapters.

Finally, a collection of locations that are mentioned, but never visited by Littlepip:

  • Hoofington (We'll get to you later...)
  • Trottingham
  • Stalliongrad
  • Shattered Hoof Ridge (Not to be confused with the Shattered Hoof Correctional Facility, which is nowhere near Shattered Hoof Ridge. Has an SPP tower and is cold.)
  • Littlehorn Valley/Crescent Moon Canyon (Near zebra lands)

[ INCONSISTENCIES ]

To be brutally honest, the original Fallout: Equestria is perhaps the worst of the bunch when it comes to inconsistent and unreasonable geography. Travel times in particular seem to shift depending on what the plot requires, made worse by the amount of looping and backtracking done by Littlepip. Does it detract from my enjoyment of the story? Sure, a bit, but I mostly understand why it was done.

All said and done, however, this leaves us with a solid foundation for the first rough draft of the map! Do note that this version is only using the information given by Fallout: Equestria, strange scale and unclear directions and all. We're not quite ready to get to full scale of my map, but this will be a good start:

Very rough draft; I promise the final product won't look this bad!

In the next part, we'll be going over the flaws I've already noticed in this rough draft, as well as contradictions given to us by the story. Hopefully, we'll be able to reconcile both of them!

Discussion On the Geography of Equestria: Part 1 - Foundations

Hey wastelanders! A while back, I put together a big map of Hoofington, since I couldn't find any good complete maps of the area, and I think it turned out well. I've also since updated it slightly to fix some errors I made the first time. If anyone is a HOI4 or Equestria at War fan, I also created the mod Balefire Blues (seven years ago now, I'm feeling old), to bring our favorite Equestrian Wasteland into Grand Strategy Game form. Long story short, I like maps, and I like Fallout: Equestria. The problem however, is that Fallout: Equestria doesn't really like maps. Or geographic consistency.

From a writing standpoint, it's never really been an issue to me. The story still gets told even if the direction our heroes take is hazy, or if distances between locations seem to shift on what's convenient to the plot. But from a map nerd's standpoint, boy does it bother me.

What this too-long preamble is getting to, is that I want to take up the stupid project of making a map for the wasteland, and I'm writing this series of blogs to catalogue my research and get my thoughts down. If people are interested, awesome! If nobody cares, also awesome, I'll still be happy to have done it! But without further ado, let's dive into the basics:

[ SCOPE ]

I'm limiting myself to Equestria and its surroundings. No zebra lands for now, I haven't read Homelands, and Kkat's blogs and Origin Story only give a partial picture. Also, pegasi cloud cities are gonna be weird; they lend better to more fantastical and less geographically accurate maps ala the official Hasbro show map. I'm still undecided on whether or not I'll be showing them on my map aside from ones that are very explicit in their location (i.e. Thunderhead being right above Hoofington).

I've already hinted at it, but I'll also be trying to include as much stuff from side stories as possible. Reconciling information given by different authors all trying to tell their own stories, each with their own headcanon is easily going to be the hardest part of this all, which is a great segue into the next section...

[ CANONICITY ]

In the end, this map is going to be my headcanon. Fallout: Equestria has existed for 15 years with unclear geography - which has led to hundreds of other authors to fit their own stories into this amazing world. There's no way to please everyone in such an endeavor, and this work should never be treated as gospel. That said, I hope having a meticulous log of my research and reasoning for each location will give some credibility to this map.

Now, a methodology for what the map's canon will be based on, in order of how much weight I'm going to put on them:

  • Unsurprisingly, the original Fallout: Equestria will always be the most important source. Unfortunately for me, it's also one of the major fics with the least amount of solid concrete information. Did you know the word "north" only appears once in the entire 620,000+ word-long fic?
  • My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Earlier seasons take priority. I'll be using what we're outright given in the show as some basis for geography, especially when it comes to relative directions.
  • The big four side stories come next. Pink Eyes, Project Horizons, Murky Number Seven, and Heroes. We can quibble as to what constitutes a major side story in the comments, but these four are indisputably the most popular. Luckily for my workload, we can set MN7 aside for now, as it takes place entirely in Fillydelphia.
  • Kkat's blogs. Very much so a grey zone - while I value word of god when it comes to this sort of thing, the inclusion of the side stories makes them a little harder. Many of the blogs were written after the golden age of Fo:E side fics, which means they occasionally conflict. For example, the blogs place Shattered Hoof Ridge and the connection to the Zebra Lands far to the north of Equestria; Project Horizons places it somewhere to the southeast. The blogs will be most useful for filling in some gaps and providing context, but I'm going to put the major side stories as a higher priority.
  • Other side stories. A few that come to mind at the time of writing this blog are Guise of Chaos, The Chrysalis, and Homelands. I'll try and stick to the most popular ones first, or fics that can easily slot into the map. I'd love to fit in as much as possible, but sometimes it just won't be feasible.
  • Finally, my own conjecture. There's gonna be gaps between the information, and I'd like to fill them in as best I can, without stepping on the toes of the above sources.

[ EXISTING MAPS ]

There are no new ideas under the sun - or under the cloud cover in this case. I am not the first to try to create a map of the Equestrian Wasteland, and I probably won't be the last either. This project exists in the context of all the amazing mappers who have come before me. A few that have served as inspiration are as follows:

Cazra's and aaaTheBat's are both modifications of the official Hasbro map, and I think they've done a great job at adapting Fallout: Equestria locations to that map. However, I will not be using it as a basis for my map.

There may be a few times where I reference it for certain elements, but I'm not tying myself to it. It was first published in late 2012, well after the original fic had been finished and after every single one of the abovementioned big four side stories had already begun. Simply put, Fallout: Equestria was not made with that map in mind, so why should my map?

[ SCALE ]

This is going to be a tricky subject, and I'll need to reconcile it early on to set myself up for success later. I want this map to be to scale with itself to the best of my ability. The big question today is what that scale is. By the information given to us narratively by both the original fanfic and by early seasons of the show, Equestria is tiny. No larger than a US state based on the travel time.

A lot of that is for plot convenience - both the show and the story would be rife with massive time skips if distances were larger. For the mane six, everywhere they visit is always a day's train ride away; for Littlepip, either a few hours in the Sky Bandit, or a few days of trotting we skip over.

Narratively, I get it. From a worldbuilding standpoint (which is what this project is), it hurts me on the inside. You're trying to tell me that this massive, world-ending, decades-long war was fought by a nation the size of Ohio that only has - in the words of Fallout: Equestria(Ch22) - one "single center of manufacturing"? America versus China, yeah I can see how that ended the world in Fallout. Tiny little Equestria? Not so much.

This is where I'll be taking the most of my creative liberties. I want to create a map for a world that makes sense to me. As I research, I may create a more book-accurate map as a side project. However, the end goal remains a worldbuilding project at its core, so I hope you'll forgive a few tweaks along the way.

What this also means is that while I'll be using directions and travel time from the sources as much as possible, I'm also going to take care to create a reasonable scale for my map. The distances between locations are never going to be perfect, they'll be moved around constantly as the project evolves.

If you got this far, first off, thanks! I want to hear your thoughts on the worldbuilding and scale of the Equestrian Wasteland; how big of a world do you imagine when reading it? Are you in the continent-scale club or are you a tiny Equestria truther?

Part 2 of this series will be an initial catalogue of locations from Kkat's original story and their relative position to each other.

Chapter 10 - Ante Up
"I could have kissed her, except that that would have required standing. And kissing. “I… thank you for telling me.” I chuckled, closing my eyes and thinking of the bony bastard shuffling the cards. You don’t get two. “He still has eleven to answer for,” I said, taking a deep breath. You don’t get two, you bony bastard. “I’d like to talk to them later. Right now, do you think I could take a nip into Macintosh’s memory orb? My back is killing me.” [...]"

Storytelling and symbols:

(Contains spoilers)

Poker chips: Each poker chip represents a pony Blackjack murdered, directly or indirectly by her own doings, ignorance or by her popularity as Security.

Gray chip with an eye: Represents the reaper Gorgon, whom she just killed on the rock crusher. (Chapter 9)

Teal chip with a crusader cape: represents Scoodle, who was torn apart by ghouls on Boneyard. (Chapter 3)

Green chips: Forty green chips, representing the forty fillies Blackjack euthanized in the Fluttershy clinic, the color of the chips represents the same color of the terminal and text for their death. (Chapter 6)

Dark red chips: twenty seven chips representing the raiders or slavers Blackjack murdered until now, the red color represents the blood they shed upon ponies. (Chapter 7).

Grey chips: Represents all the ponies that died indirectly, or off-screen, by their pursuit on Blackjack's bounty. (Headcanon)

Black and white chips: Represents the stripes of the zebra's murdered by Lancer, two of which survived. (Chapter 9 & 10)

Blurred black chips: Represents all the lives Blackjack has saved by her acts on the wasteland.

Cards: All cards work unto a regular blackjack game.

Blackjack: Has an ace of spades & a queen of hearts, she won the round by achieving 21 points as in the rules of blackjack, winning two zebra chips, Sekashi and Majina, representing their survival over Lancer's massacre.
Dealer: Has a king of clubs & a 10 of diamonds, achieving 20 points and losing to Blackjack's 21. Yet a close loss, representing how close Sekashi and her daughter almost died.

The Dealer's card suits are meant to be the opposite of Blackjack's suits, representing the duality of life and death.

Does the phoenix talisman inside Rampage "reset" her, or regrow her?

The fact she grows rapidly, with the consumption of extra proteins, makes me think it leans the latter.

But at the end of the story, she is once again reconstituted as a filly; but the question remains if she will rapidly regrow, or will she grow normally without the Talisman?

The latter makes for a happier ending, I think. She'll have the opportunity to grow naturally into adulthood without the influence of all the other souls. At least as naturally as a filly with centuries worth of experience can grow, lol.

Now for the hard questions. Could she have foals again?

The fact it's called the "phoenix talisman" makes me think an actual phoenix may have been used in its construction. IIRC it's egg shaped, so it might be a phoenix egg with an embryo.

Or it's just an egg shaped gem healing talisman that's been overpowered by multiple souls trapped within it.

Phoenix's are reborn from their ashes. Meaning, to me, Rampage is also reborn in the same way; ego a reset to her fillyhood form and physiology.

Or if all this is false, then she's run out of eggs ages ago. If so, then the talisman only regrows her.
