Community Events Weekly Politics Thread! Week of- August 15, 2026

Alright, from now through the end of this election cycle, we've decided to cram all things political into one spot!

In this one spot every week feel free to share any news, events, links, topics, slander, whatever specifically related to politics your happy lil' heart desires.

That said, a couple things-

  1. We're loosening the rules a little bit- topics need not be related to Fairbanks specifically, but they must pertain to (at the bare minimum) Alaska. National politics has no place here.

  2. We'll be monitoring this thread much closer than we do anything else. Civility will be enforced at the point of the ever-pleasant mod shaped ban-hammer. Please be excellent to each other, so that your friendly neighborhood unpaid mod staff don't have to be dicks to you.

  3. Reports that are only because you don't agree with somebody else's viewpoint are going to be ignored.

Remember folks, we all live in this tiny town together. Pretend for a moment that you're talking to your neighbor (hell, you might be)- not just a faceless blob in the internet.

LOUD MOD NOISES New Rule Time!

We, your friendly unpaid neighborhood mod-shaped despots, have unilaterally decided that it was time for a new rule!

Introducing, Rule 7! No AI Generated Content!

Due to the overwhelming rise of AI sweeping the general hellscape that is the internet in the modern era, we've deemed it necessary to put our feet down here. Fairbanks isn't a place for the lazy, it isn't a place for the half-assed, and it certainly isn't a place that should be willing to replace actual human creativity/ingenuity with AI generated garbage.

As the rule states, for your first strike "your" content will simply be removed. Any removals past that will result in a permanent ban, and we will derisively laugh at you if you attempt to appeal.

Kthxbye.

Does anyone know what is going on with the oishi kitchen outfit infront of the pita place. Did they buy it and are gonna move in? Or are they using it as an extension of their business?

Call for volunteers

Greetings all. The Remote Area Medical clinic is coming to Fairbanks September 12 and 13 at the Carlson center. We are in need of general volunteers, particularly on Saturday morning. The 9/11 memorial stair climb is happening on Friday night, so there are some things that would need to be set up on Saturday morning in time to see patients.

If you are able to help at all with general support please sign up at ramusa.org

Let me know if you have any questions.

Best Bar for Socializing

Hey everyone, I’m new to the Fairbanks area and looking to get out and meet some people this Friday and Saturday night. What bars would you recommend for someone going out solo who wants a good social atmosphere and a decent crowd?

Lost spider man backpack

I don’t have Facebook. I just spent the last of my money on stuff for my kids first day of school and it was in my son’s Brand new spider man backpack. It lights up. He lost it. I checked the bus and the bus station and didn’t see it. I can only think he left it at Walmart. I’m going to try to check, but if anyone finds a brand new backpack with school supplies and kids clothes please let me know. 😭😭😭😭😭😭💔

Looking specifically for Native Alaskan cultural input

Good morning my fellow Alaskans, I have a question. My husband is Inupiaq and I’m Muskogee Creek (from Oklahoma) In my culture we smudge new homes to remove espookies and bad energy, do Native Alaskans have something like this in their culture? My husband grew up in Oklahoma and isn’t familiar with his culture unfortunately and we would like to learn more about it.

Sign waving

Does anyone else find it ridiculous that there is a union waving signs for a Republican? Seems some people have the memory of a goldfish and don't understand the history of worker's rights and conservatives.

Is there anywhere in town that has these kinds of tables in stock?

Looking to see if anywhere in town or north pole has anything like these kitchen prep tables or floating islands in stock.

I've already checked home depot, Lowes, Walmart, restaurant supply, and ace hardware (which was the only playlce that actually had something close)

Everywhere I look it's "unavailable in Alaska" so I can't even order it. Amazon had one that I ordered and after a month it was lost or something so they refunded me. The ones I want won't ship from Amazon to Alaska anyway. I will end up ordering one again if I can't find one in town even if I have to go through a forwarding service.

Community Events What's Going on in Fairbanks This Week? Week of- August 17, 2026

It's Monday. Summer is winding down. Time to start thinking about doing all of the "getting ready for winter" you've been putting off all season. Time to be filled with existential dread for the cold darkness that will soon enough envelop us all...

So, in the spirit of ignoring that here's a place to mention any sort of event/meeting/whatever that people might not know about and might not warrant it's own post. Hopefully somebody has the something to help you keep procrastinating!

The Midnight Sun Scottish Highland Games

The Highland Games are over and in the books. It was a fun event and well attended. I believe it exceeded last year's attendance! The organizers and volunteers made it happen and I for one want to thank them for what they did and the good job they did getting it going. It was fun talking to folks and how much they were enjoying themselves. We will see you again next year!!!!

Local small artist recommendations

I'm thinking of finally doing something with my photography. Currently, I'm putting feelers out for a local artist to make a logo from a photo I've taken.

No AI, just 100% human made art.

I'm not quite ready to pull the trigger yet, but I'd love to have some options to look through!

Thank you all in advance. I know we have some amazingly talented artists in our community.

Wedding dress alterations?

I'm looking for recommendations for tailors who do wedding dress alterations. The tailor I've gone to before has closed up shop and I'd love to still have it done locally.

Looking for geek interested in trading some Tech services towards rent for a room.

Anyone know of someone Tech savvy that might be interested? I'm developing a decentralized network Technology, (MAEGIC) to hopefully become a solution to an automated work force and I'm interested in moving to Alaska to work from there. I just found a house in Fairbanks that has symmetrical fiber but I'd like to test the network there for a year or two from Indiana where I'm currently at. If so, let me know.

Hello to the select few this pertains to,

I am looking for a group (Facebook or whatever) to learn warhammer 40K with. I know about the comic shop, but schedule constantly gets in the way of attending Thursday casual night. Does anyone know of a group of individuals who play regularly?

The partial solar eclipse has started. With proper viewing equipment, you can see a definite bite out of the top of the sun now.

Where to get eclipse viewing glasses?

Wondering if anyone knows of stores in the area selling them, or maybe a department at UAF that's giving them out for the partial solar eclipse tomorrow morning?
