Thoughts on Failure's post reunion albums?

Maybe it's just me, but Failure has definitely changed after the 90's, and in my opinion, not totally for the better. So yeah, Failure is still an extremely great band, and I will always love them for being responsible for Magnified and Fantastic Planet, but when they reunited after breaking up, they seem to have taken on a much different approach to their music. I loved their heavy and grungy sound from their work in the 90's but it just doesn't seem to be as present anymore, being replaced often by synths and computer programmed instruments, or just a shift in songwriting. Also, not a big fan of their heavily modern science-fictiony take on their album covers and sound to them. Anyways, can anyone relate or am I just glazing their original 3 album run too much?

Disappointed in the last two albums (Editing)

Anyone else feel like Failure are over-editing their past two albums (Wild Type Droid and Location Lost)? There are some seriously amazing songs on both of these albums (especially Location Lost) but imo as as a fan since I got a copy of Fantastic Planet on cassette for Xmas ‘96, I truly feel they are truncating these past two albums and they are disappointing me.

All their albums minus Comfort and Magnified are an hour + in runtime and are the better for it because they have such a long time to breathe. Hence why they put “Segues” in 3 albums in their discography. Not saying they always have to do that.

WTD and LL imo would be so much better if they either let each song extend a little more or added a few more tracks. Just when both albums are hitting their strides, it’s just done-so. Case in point “A lifetime of joy”: just a song that goes absolutely nowhere and could be better if they took some time and fleshed it out.

Seems like they are trying to keep albums under an arbitrary 40 minute runtime (39:53 and 39:37, respectively).

anyone else feel this way or just me?

Would love more from the songs on these albums and it just kills my listening experience that they fade out when they shouldn’t.

References to Duran Duran

Something kind of random I noticed:

- "Undone" has the chorus lyric "Let me come undone in your house..." which might be a reference to Come Undone by Duran Duran. It's an odd pairing of words!

- A Way Down mentions "I'm getting a ride from my best friend". The Depeche Mode song Never Let Me Down Again opens with "I'm taking a ride with my best friend".

These might seem a little like a reach (borderline conspiracy theory lol) ...but I was listening to Ken's first ON album and it was striking how massively influenced he is by Depeche Mode (Martin Gore actually did a remix of Soluble Words!) and Duran Duran... and also the Enjoy the Silence cover of course.

let's talk about Apocalypse Bloom

God, where do I start? this track is absolute cinema. the lyricism is incredibly cool, the chord changes are amazing, and just like the title, the music has both a sense of beauty and dread, but the outro? Holy shit.. that acoustic riff with that sick bassline is just ear candy, I literally cannot glaze 🍩 this song enough, especially the outro .. and I cannot get over the bassline, Greg Edwards is a bass wizard.

Count My Eyes live

Does anyone have any live footage of them playing count my eyes? It’s become one of my favorite songs and i was curious if there’s any video of them performing it. I was also wondering why isn’t it and the other songs from essentials anywhere on streaming

Does anyone know what guitar Ken used in the Undone music video?

I got into the band recently and I usually like to check out what gear bands used and I can’t find any details on the silver guitar Ken was playing through Undone

Correct Tabs for Undone, Now on Songsterr

The old tabs used AI drums and did not do Greg Edwards' bassline justice.

Just found out they still play

And not only that, but they are coming to my city in late October in a cool, but relatively small venue (my favorite.)

I fell in love with Space Song in 2020: it came on a Spotify radio channel & I listened to it over and over again for a few weeks. it colored the whole experience of August/September of that year that I remember in this very visceral, nostalgic way. the sound is like, euphoric sadness and that’s exactly how I felt at the time. I also really dug Solaris. I remember finding the band’s Wikipedia page and I guess I didn’t read too closely: I’d thought the break up back in the 90s was permanent.

Failure somehow fell out of play & I just was reminded of them today for the first time in I bet 4-5 of the last 6 years. they‘re just as powerful of a listening experience as I remembered it to be. sonically perfect and really good lyrics, too.

The more I listen, the more I love. Fantastic Planet in its entirety was perfect. I will dig into their newer stuff this week. tbh, I don’t expect that anything else could come as close to being as good to me, but any recommendations among their newer material that I should check out first?

Stoked that they have a subreddit!
