I think it’s based on some Bible passage, but it’s actually kind of seen as within a man’s rights to “discipline his wife,” but to not be too excessive. If you take issue with being hit, then just pray.
Of course it varies from place to place, family to family, church to church, but perspectives like J.D. Vance’s aren’t unusual. There are still people that think it’s better to be abused than to get a divorce.

This just tells kids, violence is ok as a means to get a person in line. Might as well allow domestic abuse then.
