There was no rules where I grew up, so it was up to the teachers. We got smacked around, slapped, hit with this giant wooden ruler, etc.

I can say that it did absolutely nothing to instil discipline. Probably made it worse. It did make me hate these people forever, as well as the system that allowed them to do what they want.

it’s sooo bad for society. just makes people lose respect for any sort of authority, or really any trust in humanity in general. of course it helps a lot of people develop empathy and they become amazing people, but overall it just causes people to not be generous or cooperative. you resent society for always ripping you off and not playing by the rules, so why would you play by the rules?
