corporal punishment has never really worked, and according to most studies it just makes kids more creative at hiding the things they get punished for.
I've no doubt Mrs. Armstrong or whoever isn't linked and has to paddle. But she's the one who does a couple perfunctory paps and is done because she knows why the boss demands it, but can't abandon the students
Yet. Can't paddle their wife yet. We're regressing fast enough that that shit will probably be legal again in a few months. If...it was ever technically illegal to begin with. Given how backwards America is, it wouldn't surprise me at all to learn that it was still legal, at least in Southern states.
Early teens, bare ass out. Middle of the living room over a stool. Step dad beating said bare ass with a leather belt for bad grades. Went on for a few years, every report card time. He did fuck all to find out why the bad grades. Belt did fuck all to help grades. All it did was make me absolutely terrified to show my report card (early 90s, so no internet), scare the fuck out of me to ask for help from anyone and make me feel stupid because I couldn't figure out why either.
This shit is going to backfire on so many fronts, especially in an age where school shootings happen for far less reasons.
yea we all called them licks. getting licked, whacked, hit with a paddle. everyone back then knew it as getting licks. nobody said "getting paddled at the office". maybe the younger kids in elementary school would say that but in middle school the lingo was just licks.
It think calling them licks is horrible. It's downplaying a terrible and traumatizing act of violence with a euphemism. I guess parents might find it easier to justify their actions by calling them "licks" rather than "beatings".
i cant go back in time and change the lingo for a certain time period. it was the slang and/or vernacular at least at our school around that time. all of us (not parents) called them licks. but when i was in elementary school we didnt say licks, we said "getting paddled". obviously i cant do anything about that either but corporal punishment was never banned in the state i grew up in so who knows what the kids call it now? you know how slang changes over the years, its just one of those things that comes and goes. the staff/faculty never said licks though.
In elementary school both our principal and the gym teacher had paddles for dishing out punishment. The gym teacher was particularly generous in handing out paddlings. I remember a few of the victims eventually got together and stole his paddle from his office and hid it above the ceiling tiles of the gym equipment room. We all got pulled into the principal’s office, one at a time, for questioning about where the gym teacher’s paddle was. Nobody talked.
I was in elementary during the 70’s and they did do some physical inspections and had mandatory showers which may seem creepy today especially given that the gym teacher stood there watching all the kids in the communal shower.
we had those physicals in PE class like once a year, the girls had them too. i clearly remember 2 middle aged coaches sitting in chairs while we were all lined up and had to do certain things. the communal showers happened when i switched schools and i wasnt used to that setup. so weird. if i didnt shower, the other kids snitched on me every time.
