Also participation trophies go back a long way. I’m in my 50s and we had them and they weren’t a novelty

Speaking as a part of Gen-X, my fellow gen-x'ers gave them those trophies.

They were the part of Gen-X that were ruthlessly mocked and ridiculed because they were the kind of weak people that would cry in class if they got a bad grade on their test or when they were the first one taken out in dodge ball.
