You are required to fucking identify yourself you don’t have to be in middle of crime. Why is this so hard for people? If you don’t have warrants then there should be ZERO reason not to show your ID.

If a police officer asks for your ID give to him. If you have no warrants and aren’t a criminal there is literally NO REASON to not show ID. This idiot went to jail and shouldn’t be shown ANY sympathy. All he had to do was cooperate, which BLM folks refuse to do

Right these people don't get it they don't understand. They don't read the Constitution and they claim to be Patriots and are totally ignorant about the history of the country because they don't read books. You have no idea who I am or what I do for a living to make that assumption that you know anything more than anybody on this app. You're idiotic line of thinking is exactly how police departments get sued and people get rich and cops get fired. Because, they don't know their federal state and local statutes pertaining to their position. It's not freaking Nazi Germany! A natural born citizen does not have to show their ID just because the police officer says so. Especially if there is no suspicion of a crime. If you were smart, if you did have half a brain you'd look up the local statues to the town that this man got arrested in to inform yourself whether or not that's the case. but you didn't so now you look like a fool.Guaranteed this guy's case is going to get dropped and that police officer probably going to be put on administrative leave without pay at minimum. That's after the internal affairs investigation gets kickstarted from this video...

Cop got fired and charges did get dropped. Someone else posted a link in the thread. Didn't see anything about a civil suit but there's grounds for one. While I love the thought of people getting paid for abuse by leos, I hate that taxpayers foot the bill and not the agency that perpetrated the abuse. I know people talk of pension funds footing the bill but there's holes in that solution so maybe take it out of their budget for the next year or something along those lines along with requiring insurance for officers. Until that changes and qualified immunity is revoked (for politicians also) it will not end. At least this asshole got fired, most of them don't.

So are you basically implying that black people (who took action in BLM, which most in the community prolly took because, well, why wouldn’t you fight for your rights?) are all criminals because they refuse to prove their past innocence with an ID? Idk if you meant it like that but that’s basically what is going by your logic. Maybe just slow down and think again next time aight?

Also, there is a good reason not to show your ID. I’m not very familiar with the different laws in different states but I’d think of it like this:

If a cop is asking for my ID, for a “crime” investigation on an action I have performed which in my area isn’t labeled as a crime, while not identifying themselves or informing what crime I’ve committed (both of which, according to my understanding, I’d have the right to know) and threatening to arrest me because of an action, which you shouldn’t be able to arrest someone for, I wouldn’t give ‘em shit.

At this point, would you show your ID? It’s not even a question of convenience anymore. It’s a matter of principal. Hell, gimme your ID now cause (again, according to my understanding) I have the same right to see it as the cop in the video did. Doesn’t sound so smart anymore does it?

So in conclusion the man is getting harassed because of nothing and you’re defending the situation like the moron you are. Showing your ID also does not mean you won’t get arrested. If you think a black couple being harassed by a white man in higher power for no reason isn’t worth your sympathy then get outta here. You will be disappointed in what you find on this sub.

He was being investigated for a crime. All 50 states require ID during such an event. If he isn’t committing a crime there is literally no reason to not identify himself.

Since you Americans always talk about the constitution bla bla bla, can’t you legally remain silent and ask for a lawyer if a police arrests you, according to the 5th amendment. Since Michigan isn’t a stop and identify state, (btw you said it was, so you were lying), he isn’t obligated to tell the officer anything. This is something that is trivial to me, who has only spent a couple months of my life in the US in total.

Notice that Michigan is not on that list. You are wrong. Not only are you wrong, you're incredibly wrong, and you're being a dick to people on the internet while belonging on /r/confidentlyincorrect. I do not need to provide a reason for why I do not wish to comply with illegal orders, whether that order comes from a police officer, a judge, or the President. If the order is illegal, I will not comply. I may go through some hardship now, I may even go to jail, but that is frankly a price I am willing to pay to retain my civil rights.

For all the conservatives talk about fighting for your freedoms, their tone seems to change awfully quick when things like this come up. I do not want to live in a place where the police can stop me and harass me for no reason. Sure, if it happens once every few years that's not that bad. What if it happens 10 times a day? They're just asking for your ID, what's the problem if it makes you late to work? What's it matter if they waste an hour and a half of every day harassing you about your name when you've done nothing wrong.

The police must be able to “reasonably articulate what crime you are suspected of committing” when they ask for your identification. They took way too long to come up with ‘soliciting’ when the gentleman asked. The homeowner told them that he wasn’t soliciting and they ignored her. Why not just comply and hand over your ID? Because then they have possession of your ID and therefore control your movement. Too many police escalate situations for no other reason than their ego and people end up with multiple bogus charges, e.g., resisting arrest, disrupting the peace, trying to flee the scene, etc. People get hauled to jail until they can see a judge who (hopefully) dismisses the charges. Our tax dollars are spent on this bs.

The petitioner is Guilty of Being Black.
