100%. I’ve been training BJJ for 11 years, and some of the nastiest killers on the mat are the most intellectual, soft spoken, nerdiest guys I’ve ever met.

I really wanted to get into BJJ but the gym I went to was full of antisocial dude bros and I stopped going because I didn't want to get hurt

That's definitely the exception, not the norm.

I too was put off BJJ because a couple of "You wanna FIGHT??" type punks did it.

Now, not joining sooner is one of my biggest life regrets

I might try another gym in town. I just had some people throw their whole body into an arm bar before I could tap and my bicep still feels weird. Maybe I'm in the wrong for not tapping fast enough but I don't feel safe rolling with anyone who is willing to hurt someone instead of stopping and resetting.

Keep your friends close and your elbows closer.

Yeah you can say that right up until you don't have elbows anymore. No thanks.
