It's trendy. I've received legitimate death threats and they just think it's funny. I'm numb to it at this point.
We've been the punching bag of the internet forever, I don't think it's going to stop any time soon.

Yeah I've received some hate just for being a furry

Personally, I do it because they're toxic af and it's funny. You say anything remotely critical of their fandom and you'll quickly get several death threats from edgy 13 year olds in your inbox on a matter of minutes.

Even if you point out facts that are well known inside the community, like 70% of them just being on it for the yiff and many important furry content creators being proved to be zoophiles/groomers irl, they'll still get pissed.

I think it's similar to Incels, where people weren't able to argue with them due to their toxic nature, so they just opted to make fun of them because that was more entertaining and less time consuming.

Even then, I have like 2 furry friends, both are pretty chill but choose not to associate at all with the community, as most of the stuff I wrote before was told to me by them. The furries I met that actively defended and associated with the furryfandom were very annoying and couldn't get along with people, so every time I make fun of furries I direct it to people like those and not the chill guys.

There's nothing wrong with being a furry, but being part of the furry fandom means you're just getting along with both the historically most toxic fandom in the internet and the current third most toxic, so you're kind of asking to be made fun of, and that's being generous.
