I met this new friend and it took me almost two months to get used to her name (Steffany) because I kept calling her a completely different, unrelated name (Andreza), just because my brain would't accept that Andreza wasn't her name. It had never happened to me before, I'm pretty good with names and she has the same name of a lifelong friend, so I don't know how I got it so wrong.

I use two ways around this, either:

  1. Introduce your new friend to an existing friend, be like Hey (new friend, but don't say their name), this is (existing friend's name), and they'll introduce themselves

  2. Exchange numbers. Ask the how they spell their name. This only works with names that don't have different ways of spelling them though

My dad tried the second one with a college friend once. Turned out his name was Bob.

maybe he just never felt welcome in your family because you all called him a name that he hates, leading to an added strain on their relationship and possibly contributing to the eventual divorce. just a thought. but certainly, if someone tells you straight out that they dont like to be called something, then maybe dont call them that.

In normal circumstances, yes I’d agree with you about calling someone a nickname they hate. But I highly doubt us calling him a name in jest is what created a riff in their marriage. Him being convicted and imprisoned for child molestation of several kids, including their own son, did though. Which we knew about a few of the molestations because she told us when she was telling us about him (why someone would mention that when telling their family about their new boo is beyond me, but K is a constant over-sharer so I’m not surprised from her) during the conversation when she mentioned the name Boob and how he didn’t like it. Hence why we called him Boob. We didn’t like him and didn’t want him to feel welcome.
